Milk Intolerance/Allergy run in family?

Just wondering if anyone has experience with milk intolerance/allergy with siblings?  DS was on Neocate from 8 weeks to 12 months then on Vital Jr till about 20 months when he was able to transition to milk.  DS was FTT and has severe reflux still at 2 years old but can tolerate milk.  He was tested for milk allergy twice and it came back negative.

I am 11 weeks pregnant and just wondering what the possibility of this baby having the same issues.  Since I am much better educated this time, I would like to breastfeed and am wondering timing elimination diets and delivery.  If you have any insight that would be appreciated.  (I will talk to DS's allergist and GI doctors but his next appointments are in the new year)

  • I will be interested to read these posts as well. DD #1 was allergic to milk her 1st year of life, but it alleviated itself after that.

I read some research back then (I haven't since) that made a correlation between the ingestion of high levels of peanuts and peanut butter while pregnant and milk allergies in your offspring. I ate tons of protein from alternatives because I could not stomach meat while PG with her. Peanut butter was one of my go-to foods. So, it wasn't that far of a stretch.

  • It sure runs in our family. I was allergic to milk when I was a baby, but I did okay on soy milk. DS1 was MSPI (had mucousy, bloody stools) and was on neocate until he turned 1. He has never had milk because he refuses to drink it but he tolerates dairy fine and has since he was 1. I am breastfeeding DS2 and we thought he was allergy free until about 2 months. Then he started to have mucousy stools, then a few weeks later he had blood in his stools. I have eliminated dairy and soy and the blood went away within days. It is definitely easier to eliminate from our diet than from baby's. I think if one child has the allergy, there is a high risk of the next one having it. It was a lot less stressful the second time because I knew what was going on with him. Good luck!
