Breastfeeding

Feeding her to much?????

Normally i am a lurker but I just had my LO 2 month appt. and was told by the nurse im feeding her to much throughout the day????.(If shes hungry I feed Her) She eats about 11 times in a 24 hour period which she said is way to much. During the day she eats about every  1-2 hours and longer stretches at night between 3-4 hours. she was 7.11 at birth and weighs 10.8 now. I BF only. So my question is how long does your LO go between feedings?

Re: Feeding her to much?????

  • The nurse is wrong, just plain wrong. Feel free to dismiss that advice entirely. It's perfectly common for breastfed babies to go stretches you describe, and even more when they're tiny. Breastfed babies eat small amounts a lot because it's digested very quickly. At 2 months, my DS was eating at LEAST 12 times a day, sometimes more. He's dropped feedings as he's been able to take in more and now eats 7-8 times in 24 hours, but he's 6 months old!

  • You can not overfeed a breastfed baby if you are just nursing! You are doing great, please ignore that advice.

  • My son eats about that often too. He was 12 lbs 7 oz at 2 months & 14 lbs 2 weeks later. My pedi is pleased.

  • for the first month my DS ate every 2 hours. we gradually started trying to space feedings out further. now at 3 months old, he takes 4oz every 3 hours while at daycare and I nurse him at night and on weekends. now that he is STTN or just getting up once he sometimes only has 6-7 feedings in a day. I think you just need to go with your instincts because no one knows your baby better than you. my MIL doesn't think I'm sending enough oz for him during the day.........he weighs 13lbs9oz and gained 15oz in the last 2 weeks. he's a butterball and happy. that's all that matters.

  • Thanks so much everyone. I feel the same way but wanting to make sure my LO was getting enough at each feeding. She also said to let her cry 5-10 min before I feed her so she will eat more. I quickly dismissed that! I am no way going to let her CIO so she will eat more at once.

  • I would side-eye that nurse and I agree with everything everyone says.  IMO, you cannot over-feed a breastfed baby.  If you're ready for a little more space between feedings you could probably start working that out with LO, but if you're OK with that schedule, I'd keep at it!

WTH....I would love to know where this nurse got all this bad information she's spewing.  I feel bad for other new mothers who would just assume the nurse is right and do what she says without any further question.  Your LO sounds perfectly normal to me!

  • Heck No!  That sounds totally normal. My LO eats about 9 times per day and sometimes a few extra if she is fussy. Usually every two hours between 8 am and 5 pm, then every hour (cluster feeding) before bed and then twice between 8 pm and 8 am.

  • DD ate that often early on too!  She still eats pretty frequently during the day, although she sleeps a lot longer at night.

I would speak to your pedi about this.  You know what is right and what is not, but there are probably some patients who will blindly follow that bad advice.  The pedi should know what she's telling people.
