So my OB's practice doesn't do them, the neighboring, affiliated immunization clinic does - and they told me I would have to get a referral from my GP, not my OB, through my insurance (Tricare Prime) to see me without payment. And since they know I'm insured from my records, they wouldn't let me just get the shot and pay out of pocket.
With this hassle, I go to see my GP to get it done there. He won't give me the referral I need OR the shot, because I'm pregnant and he doesn't want to risk anything happening to the baby, even though the OB said it was completely safe. So I'm getting the damned shot after I deliver, I suppose.
But, I suppose the silver lining is that my SO got his! He's uninsured so he had to pay out of pocket. My GP was kind enough to do his regardless that SO isn't one of his patients. He got a Wolverine band-aid for being so "tough." He's terrified of shots - something about having "stuff" injected into his body creeps him the hell out.
Re: ugh, flu shot drama.
DMoney will be a kickass big sister
Just go to any pharmacy: CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, VONS/Safeway, Ralphs/Kroger, etc.
I went to CVS too, but my OB said I needed preservative free and mercury free, and when I asked at CVS the pharmacist had to look at the box to see if it was preservative free and though it did say it was on the box, she didn't know about the mercury....
Your GP certainly is out of the loop. This is really important to get BEFORE the baby is born, you can get it after but your baby CAN'T. Just go to CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Target anyplace with a pharmacy really and just pay the $30.
Or, call your OB and ask him/her to call your GP and have him do it.
The preservative is thermisol (which contains mercury).
FWIW, I didn't get a preservative free shot, AND I had it done by my OB office. The concern with that is that some people feel it contributes to autism...since I'm not one of them, I just got it done there and didn't worry about finding someone who had a preservative free one.
This is something I'd pay to get. It's not worth saving $30 and risking getting the flu. Ugh, can you even imagine going through labor sick!
You can totally get the shot at Walgreens. You just need the one made from the inactivated flu virus. Here is an excerpt from the Walgreens Flu Shot FAQ page addressing "Who Should Get the Flu Shot":
Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during the flu season. Women who are pregnant should receive only the inactivated flu vaccine. (Vaccinations should usually be given after the first trimester. Exceptions may be women who are in their first trimester during flu season, because their risk from complications of the flu is higher than any theoretical risk to the baby from the vaccine.) https://www.walgreens.com/marketing/library/centers/flu/flu_faq.jsp
Even though I have health insurance I just went to wal mart got it done for 25
I was going to say just do this. You know the risks and benefits of getting the flu shot while pregnant by now I'm sure.
Thanks ladies! I will do as you suggest - and probably have the OB give GP a call about the shot, as well, so that he has the info in case other pregnant women go in. I'm up to date on my tDap - I had it about a month before conception.
My health department charges for the flu shot and the pertussis vaccine - I sent them an e-mail several weeks back.
My OB gave me my flu shot, and hubby just popped over to walgreens and got his done.
Just as long as you suck it up and get the needle one (the inactivated virus) you'll be fine.
Actually, there is breaking news about the needle-free version not being FDA approved.
