Food Allergy

How do you handle Halloween?

For DS's first Halloween he was way too young for candy and we didn't know about his allergies. His second Halloween he didn't really care if he got candy and I'm not sure if he knew what was being put in his bucket was food. He just had fun following his older brother around. We sorted his stuff when we got home and I didn't let him have much candy because he was just a little over a year old.

This year I'm not sure what to do. I'm not sure if we should just sort candy when we get home and let him trade with his brother for safe candy if he doesn't have enough or if I should only let him put safe things in his bucket. For the most part I know what's safe but I may need to google things when we got home. I'm also worried that if we just put everything in his bucket that some things may come unwrapped and I'm worried that he may reach in and touch them. He knows what candy is now. I'm sure I'm overthinking this but I want him to be safe without restricting his holiday too much. How do you handle Halloween?

Re: How do you handle Halloween?

  • We buy safe stuff to trade with the unsafe stuff when we get home.  The unsafe stuff goes to H's work.  I just stressed that we don't touch our treats until we are home and mom/dad checks them and when they were that age I watched them like a hawk.  If it is a cold night, put him in mittens.  It is hard to unwrap and eat treats with mittens on.  :)

  • Someone else told me they trade the unsafe candies for nickels (more appropriate when older) but I thought that was a cute idea.  I am making DS candy from enjoy life choc chips and using Halloween candy molds.  I haven't looked but I am assuming there are very few safe candies that he can actually eat (16 months).  GL

Great idea!    I didn't think to trade stuff for safe stuff we buy.....  Thanks!!

  • I buy a few bags of safe candy with her so she knows ahead of time that we will be switching candies for her. I also carry a few in my pockets for the walk of trick or treating since all of her cousins snack as they walk
