6 week old baby not sleeping enough

My 6 week old is sleeping a mere 10 hours a day total.  The remaining 14 hours are spent either breastfeeding or crying.  Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do to help LO...and Mommy?  Sleep

Re: 6 week old baby not sleeping enough

  • At 6 weeks, DS pretty much stayed in his carrier - either the Ergo or the K'tan wrap. He sleeps well at night, but does not nap and is just now starting to be okay with being put down while I get things done around the house - though whatever I'm doing has to be sufficiently entertaining to watch.

  • My little 6 weeker  hates to sleep too- unless I am trying to get a full feeding in.

Seriously only naps for 20 min at a time and is really hard to get to sleep at night for a long stretch like and hour or and hour and a half.

Though lastnight we lucked out and got her to sleep for 3.5 hrs straight. it was awesome.

I found that my only chance for success in naps is if I minimize all stimulation when I try to get her to sleep.

    White noise, quiet, darkened room.

That or we go for a very long walk in the moby.

  • Our little girl isn't sleeping enough either.  She sleeps maybe 9 hours at night (7pm-8am in 2-3 hour chunks) and is getting 3-4 hour or less naps during the day - the only way she'll take a 2 hour nap is on my chest which isn't good.  We've used a baby carrier to help her sleep during the day and still get things done though it means no naps for mom.  So far we haven't found a solution because she isn't taking to her crib or the rock and play (which I just bought to put her in instead of a bouncy seat which is where she had been sleeping).

I have two theories - one is that she is not comfortable on flat surfaces (crib, etc) and that she is getting overtired and is thus not able to get herself back to sleep when she wakes up in the middle of a nap - I try to soothe her immediately and lull her back to no avail.

I am at whits end and am either going to try and go cold turkey with the crib for a few nights or wait a week and just let her sleep wherever she can for a few days.

  • my son was a great sleeper until the last few days...coincidentally he will be 6 weeks tomorrow.  He was waking to eat..then stay awake for half hour or less and then back to sleep for two hours.  but today he has been mr. crabby pants and is fighting sleep.  I think it has something to do with the dreaded 6 week growth spurt.  From what I have heard and read it can be a pretty rough couple of days during the 6 week growth spurt and it ruins their sleep.  We got lucky the night before last and he slept all night without waking from 10 pm to 5 am an then back to sleep after eating until 7:30. he then basically went to bed yesterday at 5:30 pm and slept until midnight.  we tried to wake him up to eat and play for a bit so he would sleep all night again but no such luck. there was no waking him.  needless to say after the midnight wake up he was up every 2 hours to eat and didn't want to go back to sleep after the 4 am feeding.  he has been super crabby today since because he is overtired.

we have been working on getting him out of his car seat and into his crib for sleeping.  yesterday he did really good - in fact for all of his naps I was pretty  much able to swaddle him and lay him down in his crib.  he just layed there hanging out for about 20 minutes and then fell asleep each time.

we have to do the double burrito wrap swaddle though because he always manages to get his hands out and wakes himself up but with the double burrito he can't.

unfortunately after his second night feeding he wouldn't go back in his crib and so far today he hasn't wanted to either.  feel like we made progress and now were back to square one.
