Food Allergy

so frustrated and sad! Milk allergy worsening?

I have been soy/dairy free for a week now..last week our DD was diagnosed with the milk/soy allergy.  We tried Nutramigen, but she hated it, and gagged.  It was awful.  So, I decided to cut all soy/dairy from my diet. I have had fruits, oatmeal, and chicken for a week now (oh..and lettuce and avacados).  And that is it...no lie. Nothing from a box or anything.

Well, her stuffiness and sneezing has continued, and she vomited TWICE in the last 12 hours and her poop has been like jelly :( When she vomits, she is usually trying to poo and she brings up her legs and such like her tummy is cramping.  Her little rash on her face reappeared when she vomited and she is just miserable. Could she possibly be allergic to oatmeal??  Should I try the Similac version of soy/dairy free?

we are so desperate for her to get to feeling better.  I feel like my whole maternity leave has been trying to figure her out and her eating instead of bonding with her . I go back in 3 weeks. :(

  • OH...I called the doctor yesterday and they said to bring another poopy diaper in on Monday if she's not better this weekend which it looks like I'll be doing.  If there is still blood there, what would our next step be?

  • Other women on this board can give you better info than me but my understanding with Nutramagin is that it contains more dairy traces than probably made it into your breast milk.  Our pedi put lo on it when she found blood in his diaper and he got worse and vomited when he'd eat it.  I got him in immediately with a pediatric GI who put him on a true dairy free formula - Neocate.  (Elecare is another one - he has no preference, just happened to have more samples of the Neocate for us.)  He was IMMEDIATELY improved on the Neocate.  Sucked down a whole bottle for the first time in weeks.  Our only problem with Neocate is that it weighs less than BM so it does come up more.

If you want to continue to breastfeed, just remember that it can take longer than a week to see improvement in your lo.  I cut dairy/soy for 3 weeks (he still had blood at 2 weeks, so I didn't want to challenge with breastmilk until he was blood free and that happened at 3 weeks) and he still reacted to something else in my diet, so we're on Neocate still.  I still pump because I just can't stand to give up all together just yet!

GL, hang in there, and hopefully some of the fabulous parents on this board can give you more info!

  • I tried eliminating things from my diet but DS kept vomiting and had horrible eczema.  He seemed to have horrible diaper rash and would have cramping and then vomit.  He is allergic to eggs soy and peanuts.  I switched to alimentum when he was on formula and he did great.  I agree with PP that it takes a while to see a difference when you make a change.  I know it is hard to stick it out but if you want to continue BF then I would wait a bit longer.  GL

  • I have found that a lot of oatmeal has traces of milk in it, too much for DS.  It also took a full month for all the dairy to clear my system completely so that is a possibility as well.

  • our pedi GI said it takes 2-3 weeks for foods to completely clear your system and your LO's. It took that long for me with each food I eliminated. Foods I took out are in my siggy, but we ended up having to go on Elecare (like PP said, there isn't a difference from the Neocate it's the same thing just different brands). I restricted my diet for over 4 months and blood would clear then continue to come up and I'd restrict more things. It went on forever and eventually I didn't have the option to keep continuing (although I still pump and I'm still on the diet because it feels weird not to and for some reason I have it in the back of my mind that things will change even though the GI said there is a less than 1% chance)

Good luck! If you need more food ideas private message me and I can give you some!

  • If you want to do the elimination diet- it will probably take more than a week to get it all out of your systems (hers too).  Have you pulled up the list of ingredients you need to avoid?  I know you can find it through google- milk and soy hide as all kinds of things in ingredient lists.  If you are using the instant oatmeal packets- there's milk in those.  The good news is that oatmeal is super easy to make without the packets and way cheaper too.

  • Ugh, I feel for you and your LO.  I will tell you my DD was way worse on Nutramigen than on any of the other formulas.  She had a bad diaper rash and skin rash which all cleared up within 2 days on Elecare formula.

I would ask your pedi for Elecare or maybe make an appointment with a pedi GI specialist.  Ours has been wonderful.
