Did I make a mistake? Swaddle related.

After about a week or so of being home I stopped swaddling LO really for no other reason except she likes to have her hands by her face and is a side sleeper. I tried to swaddle her last night because she wouldn't go to sleep and she fussed and kicked a lot. Should I try to reintroduce the swaddle or just not worry about it? She sleeps pretty good at night but I do have to nurse her to sleep to get her to go down. She doesn't nap well during the day.

  • I did the same thing... stopped swaddled once home since DD liked her hands up by her face.  Then around 4 weeks I bought the Miracle Blanket in hopes of sleeping longer than 2 hour stretches at night.  Got 5 a 5 hour stretch that night... It was HEAVEN.

Unfortunately, this week she has fought the swaddle to no end and it hasn't been working for us.  It's a bummer. I am going to try to do it again in a couple days (maybe she is going through her 6 week growth spurt and that's why she is fighting it?).  I also bought 2 swaddle straps and have been dying to try them but she fights that, too!

I would say try to re-introduce the swaddle- when she is good and tired! She will fuss but if she is really tired then you can swaddle her and try to nurse her to sleep!

  • i swaddled for about 2wks and then DS would squirm and wiggle so i started using the sleep sacks.  at about 5wks, he started to keep himself awake with his hands.  so it was back to the swaddle.  now he is much happier and sleeps about 6-8hrs at night.  i haven't managed to get a napping schedule nailed down but when i do i will swaddle him for that.  right now he is napping on the go.

  • should i swaddle her with her hands out? i feel so bad taking them away from her (even though she wears mits so its not like she sucks on them!) i guess its just a comfort thing to have them by her face.
  • we initially swaddled with arms out, but that didn't help her startle reflex so we started swaddling with her arms in and it's been a whole lot better.  At first I think it did bother her but then she got used to it.  I think she knows now that swaddling means sleep.  We have been putting her down awake but drowsy and she puts herself to sleep which is great.  I would say try swaddling arms out first and if that doesn't work then put them in.

  • I swaddle with one hand in, one hand out.  It's a happy compromise.  Ever since I started giving her one hand, she's been sleeping through the night.  Before, she would thrash around forever trying to break free.  Try the compromise route...worked for us!  Here's a picture of our little "Dr. Evil".

  • I think it wouldn't hurt to try. Maybe try on a weekend night or some other night when it doesn't matter as much if they don't get as much sleep. We didn't swaddle LO because, same as you, he liked his hands by his face. About a month ago, i decided to try the Swaddle Me. It has worked wonders. He rarely is able to get out of it (Although, sometimes he gets is hands out of the bottom of it). Since then, he has started the process of STTN. He basically STTN, an average of 3/4 of the nights of the week.
