human paci... HELP

So my LO has been super fussy lately and it seems the only thing to calm her down is the boob. I watch her and after 2 or 3 swallows she just sucks lightly like I'm a pacifier. As soon as shes asleep I try to take it away and she immediately wakes up and frantically looks for the boob. I've tried to give her a paci and after a few sucks, she realizes its not the real deal and spits it out. I've tried buying different shapes and had DH try so that she wouldn't smell me. Last night she stayed latched on for almost an hour and a half because I didn't know what else to do... please help!  TIA

Re: human paci... HELP

  • I was there so I know exactly where you are coming from.  I don't have much advice unfortunately besides just keep trying the paci.  On the other hand this may help ensure that you don't have low supply issues :)  LO will get through this phase.  Enjoy the snuggle time while it lasts.

  • Awww Miranda is my name :) Love it!

I understand how you feel. My son was on my boob 24x7 for the first 8 weeks of life. It will get better I promise. She is helping establish a great milk supply and babies BF for many reasons besides hunger. She may just need to feel close to you. I know it is so so hard, but keep it up and it will pay off I promise.

  • Really at the age, it is great for her to be at the breast that often. Keeping baby to breast helps you establish a good milk supply. Keep offering the paci, your LO will likely eventually take to it. I swore my daughter never would, and at about 2 1/2 months she finally did.
  • Exactly this. ^^^^ try a gumdrop or soothies paci. DD likes these cause she can kind of "latch" on to them

  • This will happen now and then, especially this early.  She also may be having a growth spurt.  If I remember correctly, there were times when I knew he was just using me as a pacifier and definitely was not hungry, so I would swaddle him tight and hold the paci in his mouth and rock him and he would eventually fall asleep.

This may also just be a phase that will go away within a few days.

  • Try holding her in the same position you would when you're bfing and then give her a paci such as a soothie which is more like a natural nipple. My DD would love to be at the breast all day, but for practicality sake I use the soothie (I have a 3 year old), it works unless she is starving or has a tummy ache.

  • I was a human paci too. Still am sometimes. Its great for your bond and supply but I know how hard it can make life in other ways. Hang in there! It will get better and youll get used to it, or LO will learn to soothe in other ways. Check out the No Cry Sleep Solution book, it has tips for these issues. But if you can deal with it, it is great for your nursing relationship.
