3rd Trimester

Stripping Membranes? Talk to me about them.

Does it hurt? What is it "supposed" to do? I'm going to google it too I just wanted to ask you ladies first. If you got yours stripped did it work? All I know is that it does something to "make" you go in labor. Well obvously if your body is ready. TIA

Re: Stripping Membranes? Talk to me about them.

  • The Dr sticks their hand up there and swoops their fingers around to separate the membranes from the uterus in an attempt to jumpstart labor.

With DD1, I went into labor with 48 hours. Didn't hurt at all, just uncomfortable.

With this baby, I've had it done twice with no signs of labor as of yet...so no, it doesn't always work. Didn't hurt at all the first time; *almost* hurt the second time.

  • Getting my membranes stripped didn't hurt me, but internal checks don't bother me either. It releases hormones that help stimulate the uterus and cervix to start the progression of labor. I had my membranes stripped at 37, 38, 39, and 40 weeks. DD was born at 41 weeks, so for me, it didn't work at all!

  • Ditto the purpose is to separate the 'bag of water' from the uterus by the fingers of the OB.  For me, it was very painful.  I had it done on Monday (the 17th) and all's that happend was some intense contractions for about 2 hours post sweep that went away with rest.  Oh, and I've been loosing the MP ALL week. And here I sit waiting.

  • With DD #1 I had it done twice and nothing but with DD#2 I had it done and I went into labor a few hours labor...it really does depend on if your body and baby are ready!
  • i don't see the point of it... nature will take its course
  • I have had it done twice. Didn't hurt me but internal exams dont hurt me either (thank god for an OB with small hands!). I am still pregnant (2nd stripping was a few days ago). I also didn't dilate anymore than I was before the stripping. So for almost five weeks I have been at 1cm with no progress and membranes stripped twice. Works for some, but not all.

This. My OB did it with my first pregnancy without asking/telling me, and I was pissed! It hurt a lot and although I spotted after it did not send me into labor. I was thankful though - I'm of the school of thought that babies are generally born when they are ready (barring extreme circumstances).

In my case, it was an attempt to jumpstart labor in hopes of avoiding a medically necessary induction next week.

  • Thanks ladies. Yea I know it all depends on my body and baby but it doesn't hurt to try.

  • I had it done twice it didn't hurt me but later in the day I had pretty severe cramping... no labor. But the second time after I got up off the table TMI Warning, I had blood pour out :( it was more embarrassing than anything with DH standing right there!
