Is your last bottle before bed...(FF question)

Hey ladies

So DS usually goes down for a good 4-5 hour stretch at night (which we have no problem with), however when he wakes up he is starving--he screams until he gets the bottle, sucks it down so fast (we still burp inbetween but even that is tough cause he's so upset), half the time spits up most of it and then screams some more until he passes back out.

He normally gets 4 ounces at a feeding (every 2-3 hours during the day) but I was thinking that maybe if I gave him a bigger bottle at night, when he wakes up he won't be as starving?  I'm not looking to stretch out his sleeping habits (I know he'll go longer when he's ready) but I'm just trying to make him less crazy at his 1 am feeding!

So my question is do you ladies make a bigger bottle at bedtime or do you do the same amound as you do during the day?  I"m a FTM so I'm just curious what others are doing.

  • I wouldn't bother unless you know he's likely to drink it. If he's full after 4 ozs it won't do you any good - and if he does drink it before he realizes it's full he might just spit it up in his sleep - and that is not a fun mess to clean up.

  • My LO is also eating 4oz every 2-3 hours during the day, but she stretches out about 9 hours at night. She wakes up starving, but is still satisfied after the 4oz. I honestly wouldn't give him any more than the 4oz at night if he seems satisfied.

  • DS gets the same amount of formula per bottle no matter what time his feedings are and we get between 7-9 hour stretches out of him now.  He's definitely starving when he wakes up though! :)

  • Lo eats the same amount at eat feeding except her midnight feeding. She usually eats 4.5 oz but in the middle of the night she eats 5 (I think she is more hungry because she has gone longer since her last bottle). LO eats when she gets up from her last nap so by the time she is going to bed it has not been the full 3 hours yet since her last bottle. So LO actually gets a smaller bottle that will help hold her over until she gets up at night.

  • I give the same amount at each feeding. If LO's body can handle an extra ounce at one feeding then LO can handle it at every feeding, right? MY LO sleeps 9 hours a night and at her first "eh" or stir in the morning I pick her up, change her and straight to a bottle while she is still not fully alert so that she doesn't have time to work herself up into a full blown out hunger cry and that works for us.

I think it might be worth a try.  You could always stop to burp after his usual amount and then try to gauge whether he's likely to drink more before offering (agree with pp that you don't want him to overeat, and then spit up.  We had that issue last night, although it was all over me, not in her sleep).

I give dd her last bottle before her bath, but lately she's having trouble going down and will attack the paci. like she wants to devour it, so I've been taking another 2 oz. bottle upstairs with me before her bath to offer her afterwards.  She usually only takes about an ounce, but it helps get her really drowsy.

I agree with this. We are in the process of moving LO up to a higher amount at feedings. He was at 4 oz for a while but recently seems not satidfied at some feedings, but not all. So we pull out out the bigger bottles and we play it by ear with each feeding, since we burp him pretty much after after every ounce anyways. Basically, if we use the smaller bottles, we fill it up to 4 oz. If he seems still hungry after that, we will fill 1-2 more ounces and feed him those. If we have the bigger bottles, we feed him 5 oz. I feel like you've just got to experiment with it to figure it out.

  • We give her the same amount as during the day unless she is looking for more. She sleeps about 11 hours at night. She's usually pretty happy when she wakes up too!
