What is up with this heartburn?

I've had mild heartburn throughout my pregnancy, but the last few days it has been almost unbearable! This afternoon I ate a snack and took a nap... While I was sleeping I had horrible acid reflux, so bad I ran to the bathroom and threw up. I ate a few pieces of bread and cheese, thinking it might settle my stomach and it just keeps getting worse.

I can't believe how ill I feel. What is going on? I'm thirsty but scared to drink too much water because it seems to make it worse. I usually don't take anything for heartburn, but I might have to start. Sheesh.

  • I was a strictly Tums girl..until it made me throw up. I was NOT going down that road again.

My doctor has me on Zantac..it's not a prescription or anything, and it really does help the most out of anything I tried.

    I hope that helps!

  • Drink as much water as you can! It's good for you! And also keep antacids on hand! I buy the target brand and they taste much better than rolaids or tums! Be careful though! If you go past the recommended dosage, either tell OB and get a prescription, or try Tums Complete. My bff recommended Tums complete since she had horrible heartburn in the later months!

  • Id never had it before so my first time getting it was so bad I GENUINELY woke SO up because I thought I was having a heart attack. it wasnt until he asked me to point to where it hurt that I realized it was a straight line. Not much advice here-- tums are gross but definitely helpful for the short term. Hope it gets better for you!

  • Blech. Tums. I guess I gotta mom up and eat them, huh?

Cuz I know if I take my vitamins right now I'm gonna puke. So here goes nothing...

    Thanks ladies!

I have had really bad heartburn the last couple of days as well.  I just remembered today what worked during my last pregnancy.  Suck on hard candies and don't stop, if you stop (when it is really bad) it will come back but as long as something is in your mouth you will feel a lot better.  Make sure you find a candy that you like because you will get sick of certain ones by the end.

Oh, that sounds way better than tums. I'll try that first, thanks for the tip!

  • I am totally with you! It seems to come and go for me, but some days are so bad and it wakes me up at night. =( My Dr said to just take Tums, and she actually said that it can be aggravated by highly acidic things like coffee/soda as well as grains. I haven't been drinking soda and my decaf coffee is also pretty limited, so I'm going to "try" and cut back a bit on my grains.... we'll see!

  • Oh. You know, I've been having a lot of grains for the last few days. Like oatmeal cookies and bread and stuff. I typically don't eat stuff like that, so it would make sense if that's what is bugging me. Hmmm....

  • Milk seems to help me when I get it.

  • ugh. Heart burn sucks! It doesnt get any better throughout pregnancy. Water water and more water helps. Tums as other ladies suggested or if it gets really bad, your dr can prescribe something
  • Check with your doctor first, but I highly recommend Prilosec OTC. My heartburn was so bad I would wake up choking on my own acid reflux. I tried taking Zantac and it worked for a while but then came back. My doctor suggested Prilosec which I have now been taking every morning for about a month. My heartburn is pretty much gone now. HTH!

  • Mine is getting so bad that I all of a sudden throw up in my mouth a little (yuck!). I have been taking Tums but am going to ask at my next OB appt if there is something else I should take.
  • I am at a point at which I am practically snacking on Tums every night - I know exactly what you feel!
