s/o milk

Do you buy separate milks for your differently aged children.  DD currently drinks 1% but when DS transitions to milk in two few months I was thinking of just putting her back on whole to avoid having two gallons of milk going at once.  FWIW, both DS and DD are in the 35th percentile for weight and DD has in the last month or so cut her milk consumption down to 16 oz a day from 24 oz.

Re: s/o milk

  • Yeah, we did for maybe a year with the girls - when DD #2 hit a year old and DD #1 was 3 yrs. old.  Mostly because DD #1 is/was a high percentile in weight (so, 2% for her) while DD #2 had a few medical issues when she was just over a year old (months of diarrhea and the c dif infection) - and she had to be on whole milk to aid with weight gain.

I can't remember when we just said forget it and put them both on 2%.  I vaguely think is was when DD #2 turned 2.

ETA:  We'll see how DS's dairy sensitivity works out - we may be buying 2% for the girls and soy for him.  Sad

  • We are buying different milk for each girl right now.  DD1 drinks skim with me and DH and DD2 drinks soy.  Darn those dairy sensitivities!  But, even without the need for soy, we would probably be buying 1 skim and 1 whole.

  • yes, at times we have 4 1-gal containers in the fridge! (if 2 of them are about to run out and we just bought 2 new ones), it's so ridiculous but will continue for another 8 mos. DD is 3 and is on 2% milk while DS is 16mo and is on whole milk, when he's 2 he'll get 2% and then both will get 2% for a few years. The other day I also bought a half gallon of skim for me and DH.

  • Yes, there was a year I was buying 4 different kinds of milk every week! I still have to buy 3 different kinds because I can only have lactose free milk. DD and DH drink skim and DS drinks 2%. They drink enough everyday that I never have to throw any out.

  • We just kept Maggie on whole milk (she also is low in the weight percentiles) to make it easier.  I think soon we will probably switch them both over 2 or 1%.  They don't seem to notice a difference in the taste and now that Molly is older we can switch.
