New vs. Used Crib Mattress
Hi ladies, I'm hoping some of you can help with this. We are getting used baby furniture from DH's aunt (crib, changing table & dresser). When he talked to her recently, she mentioned that she has the crib mattress as well and that it is still in really good shape (she used it for both of her daughters, the youngest is now 11yo). I've heard, pretty much everywhere, that you are supposed to get a new crib mattress for every child. When I told DH this, he asked me about the rationalle behind it, and I have none. Does anyone know why we're supposed to get a new mattress for every baby?

There have been studies connecting it to increased risk of SIDS. I can't find the studies but here's an explanation

I personally would not use a second hand mattress, but that it just me.
Its a really old mattress and saftey standards, I am sure has changed since then.
Have you checked the crib, to see if there was a recall on that crib? I would before I used any second hand stuff.
Its not that expensive to buy a mattress, do yourself a favor and invest in one.
Personally, I wouldn't use a used mattress. Also, have you checked to see what kind of crib it is? A crib from over 11 years ago is fairly likely to be a drop-side crib, and it's now illegal to buy, sell or donate drop-side cribs because of the hazards they pose.

Wow, can you be a little more NASTY. I think that lady was very NICE in telling you about the crib. You didn't have to respond that way.
If you DH needs convincing then YOU find out the information yourself if you have that type of attitude.
Its your child and you should do what YOU and YOUR DH want to do.....
Don't ask us with that attitude.
mold, urine, feces, vomit. I would hope that's enough reason for anyone to consider a new mattress (considering there are a number of very reasonably priced options and it's likely the least expensive of all the furniture items you will have to buy)
I'm sorry if you thought I was giving attitude, but that was not my intent at all.
I just meant to say that I am not looking for information on the crib itself, only the mattress. As I stated previously, I am not able to find much information explaining why it's necessary to get a new mattress if you have access to one that is in good condition. I thought that perhaps some of the women on this board would know the answer offhand. I don't expect anyone to go looking for the information for me, but if the information is readily available, I'm happy to see it.

^ This is what I was thinking. I plan on getting a new one just because you have no idea what a used one has been through, or where it has been stored. (Smoke, dust, mold, etc.) :-)
I do agree with everyone that we should get a new mattress and not use the one DH's aunt has. I know that they aren't very expensive, but I think after seeing everything that we will need to get for our LO, DH is looking at any opportunity to save money, if possible, and if it's safe for LO of course.
I'm glad to have some reasoning behind telling him that we need to buy a new mattress. I know that the SIDs issue will definitely be a good point, and really he shouldn't need any further argument than that. At the same time, I know the concerns with feces, smoke, etc. will be knocked down, because his aunt is extremely clean and healthy and probably stored everything as though she were going to use it again herself. I guess I'm just thinking "out loud" here. Again, thank you all for your input. I'm sure that I can convince DH that it is in the best interest of LO to get a new mattress and if he still doesn't agree, I'll just go out and buy one myself
Ok devil's advocate here but: Stored it where? In the basement, attic? Do they have a moisture problem at their house? Rodent problem? Was it wrapped well in plastic? Did she have the mattress thoroughly cleaned before storing it? It she sure her youngest never had urine soak through the bedding to the mattress? What about sweat or other fluids (non bodily)- any chance there could be mold/fungus from them? Is the mattress still as firm as it should be for an infant?
