They are expensive. And in a way they seem more decorative than useful. But I've never been a parent, so what do I know! Do you as parents see a benefit in crib mobils? Is it worth almost $50?
My LO is a little over a month old, and I don't have a crib mobile. I might buy one when she gets a little older and really starts to recognize things like that. For now, we use a sound machine, and that works amazing.
I don't think it's a need, if I had to chose I would spend money on something else over it. That said, my LO just started to really enjoy it...I put her in her crib and wind up the mobile while I put laundry away and she likes staring at it and enjoys the music, she fusses when it stops.
My LO LOVES the mobile over her swing. I wish I had a way to hang one over her changing table. She is not in her crib yet but I am definitely getting one for it when she transitions.
I swear by mine. DS LOVES staring at it, even if he's not asleep. I bought the TINY LOVE take along on the advice of someone on here. I found it for $15 at a consignment shop.

Dear God, Since I couldn't hold my little one in my lap and tell him about you, could you hold him in your lap and tell him about me?
I wasn't going to get one but my LO has recently started loving looking up at things on her playmat, so I got one used at Once Upon a Child yesterday for six bucks. She is loving it, but I refused to buy one full price.
There was NO way I was paying upwards of $40 or $50 for a bunch of hanging stuffed animals that were basically only visually pleasing for the parents so they could complete their nursery decor and did nothing to stimulate the baby mentally.
So I googled "munari mobile" on the recommendation of a friend and for about $10 and an hour of my time, I made a great mobile that's hanging above my LO's crib that he LOVES looking at - has loved staring at it since he was about 2 weeks old since it's basic contrast/black & white shapes. And I know it's actually probably helping his sensory development in addition to entertaining him.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

I didn't buy one because I figured with the Sleep Sheet and the aquarium DS wouldn't need a mobile.
However, I think I'll go buy one this weekend now. He is always looking for things to look at and it might help him have some relaxing time in his crib and might start enjoying it there more.
I wasn't going to buy one, but found one for $10 at a garage sale. DD likes it so much that she will cry when it shuts off. I agree that they are expensive, so I would keep your eye out for a used one...it isn't like they get dirty or are touched very often.
