Trouble TTC

Did I do it wrong? Or is it really supposed to hurt this much?

So I gave myself my first shot of Follistim last night, and um, OWW!  Not the needle, just everything afterwards.  I had given myself an Ovidrel shot before and felt nothing, during or afterwards, so I guess I was expecting the same with this shot.  The nurse did say it might sting a bit, which it did, and then it burned, and almost 15 hours later my skin is sensitive to the touch, I feel like I got a stabbed, and I'm certainly not looking forward to doing this again tonight.

None of this is unbearable, just an annoying discomfort.  Is this normal, or did I potentially do it wrong, or worse, could I be having an allergic reaction...  Ugh.

  • Where did you inject?

I only ever did my stomach, so I'm not sure if it might feel different in your leg.  Sometimes it stung a bit, but the only time it hurt longer then a few minutes was after a number of days when I would mistakenly inject in the same location too many times.  I was doing 2-3 injections a day so sometimes I went too close, too soon and it felt bruised.  But that never happened to me after the first.

I know nothing about a potential allergy.  You can always call the nurse line and see what they say.

Good luck, hope it feels better soon.

  • I've taken a lot of Follistim at this point - and personally, I have little reaction other and a bit of redness/soreness at the injection site.  It definitely doesn't burn.  But I think I have heard this is a s/e that others sometimes experience.  I think if it were an allergy it would itch and puff up and you would have more discomfort.   There is no harm in talking to your nurse to help ease your mind.

  • I think if it were an allergy you'd be itchy and red/puffy in the injection area, if not other places as well.  You can always ask your nurse if you're worried, though!  No harm in bringing it up.

I only had next-day tenderness a couple of times during stimulation.  The few times I did notice it, it was towards the end of stimulation and was probably from the number of shots and increased volume of meds being injected.

I hope you feel better soon!

  • How did you do with the pen? DH has been giving me my shots, but it's been kind of tricky with our schedules and I'm wondering if i could administer them myself in a pinch. The menapure I feel like maybe i could handle since it's in a syringe, but i also have a gonal F pen and that seems like it would be harder to do myself?

Last night, the menapur hurt so bad i nearly cried. I think because it was the fourth one, and I'm running out of space! The Gonal F usually hurts a lot less. I do that one second, so the area gets iced a little longer.

  • So your all probably right, I would notice more if it was an allergy.  My thoughts are I'll see how tonight goes, and if its as uncomfortable now, I'll call the nurses line.  I hope its just a fluke.

doggie mama - I don't like DH giving me the shots, so I do them myself.  I have a follistim pen, and it wasn't that hard.  I just held it in my right hand and pushed the button down with my thumb.

  • I never really had any s/e, but it did sting a bit more when I didn't allow the Follistim to come up to room temperature.

  • For me the high doses hurt for a little while after the actual injection, like an achy feel. A few times it really stung, but I think it was because I was to close to a previous inject site. Both cycles of Follistim gave me a few bruises.
