Someone sit with LO in car?

I was just wondering, as we were driving home from the Dr.'s, if there is someone else in the car with you and LO, does someone sit in the back with them? I always sit in the back with Brandon while DH chauffeurs us around.  I felt trapped back there and can never see past the passenger headrest.  I like to see where we're going, as DH ALWAYS gets lost, misses an exit, etc. and then asks me where to go and he knows I can't see where we're going!  I just took the headrest off the passenger seat so I can see out the front window. [Poll]

Re: Someone sit with LO in car?

  • I sat in the back with DS until he was about 3.5 months. Until then, I was worried about his head rolling around or tipping forward. Now that DS has excellent head control, I sit in front with DH.

We have a mirror installed in the back of the headrest, and I love it! Even if I'm in the passenger seat up front, I can easily look back and see DS's face. I highly recommend getting one.

ETA: I will sit with him if he's being super fussy.

  • sometimes. If I think she'll scream, then I'll sit back there with her. If its a shortish drive during one of her happy periods, then no.

  • I always sit up front. But we always talk to her, and if she's upset we try to entertain her.

  • Yes, but only because he hates his car seat and screams.  He screams less with someone in the back seat.

     Same here..lol
We are doing a 12 hour road trip (in 2 days) to Texas for Thanksgiving so we'll see how that goes since she hates the carseat.

  • I always sit next to LO. I like her to be happy, and having me there seems to keep her content. I don't ever see me not sitting back there with her. It was tough taking a trip with her and being the driver, but at least she slept most of the way :)

  • Only time I rode in back with DD was on the way home from the hospital.  My sister has always ridden in back with niece and is still doing so at 2 years old.  We didn't want that so never started it.

^ this. For the first month, I always sat in the back with DS, even though it was uncomfortable. But then DF would always say how he misses me up front :( so now I only sit in the back if DS is fussy and needs a bottle or paci.

  • No. It has never even crossed my mind to sit back with lo. Maybe its cause lo has siblings with him most of the time. But I never did it either when I only had one kid.

  • SS:  We always sit together in the front unless there is something going on.  If we need to feed her, one of us will sit back there.

  • DD falls asleep about 30 seconds after we get in the car, so she is usually napping (which she is a nap fighter during the day so I just let her sleep). We do have a mirror too so I can see her and in the odd chance she would be fussy I'd sit back there with her.

We don't have room in the backseat with 2 carseats and I dont usually have anyone else to drive.

  • SS = I'll sit in the back with her if we're doing a longer drive (hr+), otherwise, I'll sit in front.

I realize I should stop this soon or she'll come to expect it and I don't want to be doing it when she's a toddler.

  • On short trips around town, no.  On longer trips, yes, because she sometimes screams so I try to entertain her so it doesn't get to that point.
  • We leave him back there unless he's really fussy/crying - then I will duck back there.  He's gotten much better in the car lately, so he needs far less 'supervising' and I like that time with my DH.

  • I did for the first week... but then I decided that it wasn't good for her to get used to.  However, if she is being extremely fussy I sometimes go back there.  Just to get her to stop screaming, but that is very rarely.

LOL This is why I drive and make DH sit in the back!!! We're doing it less and less now, but in the beginning one of us (mainly DH) was almost always in the back just in case DS got hungry---which he had a habit of doing...

  • I voted SS. When DS was a couple weeks old I would sit in the back. Now, I only sit in the back for long trips or if DS is fussy/hungry.

  • I sat with her several times during our roadtrip to Oklahoma and back because she was getting lonely sitting by herself in the back for 12 hours a day. Otherwise I don't sit with her.

  • I voted no, because in general that's the truth. However, if she's particularly fussy I'll jump back there to calm her. Sometimes I'll climb over the seat to get back in the front after she falls asleep (if it's a long ride) other times I just stay back there and hold her hand until we get where we're going. But, most of the time, no, we're in the front, she's in the back, and everyone seems just fine that way.

  • I voted yes, but it's really kind of SS. If she's sleeping, I'll sit in front. If it's a short drive and she's happy, I'll sit in front. I've just had too many times where she has a breakdown while we're looking for a safe place to pull over and I HATE that.

Exactly. Otherwise she's back there alone, but she doesn't mind. She likes riding in the car.
