March 2012 Moms

nervous about being a student while pregnant...

I don't know if I can miss any school, but I'm going back in Jan! and baby is due in March! Has anybody gone to college while pregnant and not been able to miss any classes? I am nervous about how the whole pregnancy will be..when your water breaks do people know? what if I'm in class and all the sudden...!!....? And what if i have to pop a baby out and be back in school the next day? I'm overwhelmed thinking about it. Does anybody have any advice?

  • I am currently going to college right now. :-)  Being due in March, it will be impossible to not miss class. That's why for next semester I am just doing a few online classes at the University. That way I only have to go to the campus to take the exams and I don't have to try and plan around when I will give birth.

If at all possible, I would recommend just taking online classes. But if you have to take regular classes, then TALK TO YOUR INSTRUCTORS. They are almost always very nice and will work with you if you just set up a time to sit down and talk with them about you being pregnant and when you are due.

It is going to be very difficult, but as long as you are motivated, stick with it!. That being said don't go overboard on classes, just take a few or it will be very hard to stick with it.

    Good luck to you! :-)

  • I went to a small college with a friend who got pregnant our senior year.  She was due in December.  Her water broke and she went in to labor during our final exam session in Religion class.  Another friend and I left (with the prof permission) and took her to the hospital.  We stayed with her until her husband and parents arrived. Just thought I'd share my experience with pregnant students...

I don't really have any advice for not missing classes :(

  • thanks i didn't even think about the online classes. I have an open house next tuesday for the college. What about if you are in school and the water breaking? You know how the movies are.. I just don't know what the reality is! How embarrassing would that be if it happened in class! would people know?

It depends how much of a scene you make, but yes, they'd probably know. I mean it won't flood the place but it will be as though you peed yourself. And then when you walk, it keeps running down your leg. It's not great to do in public. With DS I was making puddles all over the L&D waiting room.

^ I agree, they will more than likely know. But hey, you're pregnant! I bet most people will jump up to help you. It'll probably be a little embarrassing but I wouldn't worry about it. :-)  My OB says that generally when the water breaks it isnt like a flood gate, it's just like a little trickle so I doubt it'll be like the movies.

  • I think being in school is a challenge but definately do-able! Water breaking at school is no different than when it happens to a mom at work or in the store. And I can't imagine a professor not willing to work with a pregnant student on absences or missed classes because of labor and delivery. Just be upfront from the beginning and you'll do great! You're not alone. I will be finishing my masters degree and will be in the classroom starting in January with my thesis defense set for the second week in March. With a due date in the first week. It'll be an adventure but I'm sure we can both manage!! Good luck to you at your new school! P.S. My optimism aside--I'm sure nervous too!

  • I'm due the Sunday before finals in Winter quarter.  I talked to my advisor though, and she said pretty much anyone will be willing to work with me if I don't make it through finals.  The worst case would be that I'd have to take an incomplete and take the exams later.

  • I was in school while pregnant with DD.  I took a 3 month break, but had a non-traditional schedule so I was able to take off from mid-March until early June (DD was bon 4/2).  The hardest part for me was going back when she was a couple months old.  We were lucky that DH was able to be with her when I wasn't.  I wouldn't worry about you water breaking.  Chances of a gush are pretty small. Chances of a gush during class are even smaller.  As pp.'s said- talk to profs as early as possible.  If they seem inflexible, drop the class and pick one up with more flexibility.  Do you have a childcare plan for a teeny baby?  You'll probably need to go back before 6 weeks, and daycares won't take them before then.

  • I'm going back in January as well. Full time. I'm taking 2 online classes, and 2 on campus. Should be interesting to say the least!

  • I was a student when DS was born 2 years ago and I am again for this pregnancy.  When I was pregnant with DS I was still taking my gen ed courses and this time around I am in the Bachelor's Nursing program and it is definitely more difficult this time around but still doable.  I will still be doing clinicals next semester while I am 8 months pregnant.  It's a little stressful but I don't want to take any time off and push back my graduation.
  • I am in school now getting my Masters but plan on taking off next semester since I am due in March. I would miss way too many classes. I don't even think I could keep up with an online class having a new baby around. I hope to take a summer online class to start again. Good luck!

  • I am going to school right now, but it is all online. I have it set up so my two classes next semester are the first 8 wks and should be finished in February. I think if you communicate with your professors and advisor about your situation, they will help you work ahead or gather work that you will miss while you have the baby.

  • Yeah, I am going to school now, and will be doing my last term winter semester. I'm going to try and do all online classes (even though I hate them) just so I don't have to waddle around campus. But I am worried about finals week happening when the baby comes. That might be a little hard... I'm assuming we'll just have to communicate a lot with our professors, and hopefully they will be understanding. It's hard though.
  • i am in school right now and still deciding whether or not i should take the next two quarters off.  winter quarter starts in january and ends march 25.  spring quarter starts on april 2.  my due date is march 30 and the school i go to offers very limited online classes, most of which arent in my field of study.
