New to The Bump

Newbie...

So hubby and I are planning for our first for April of 2013.  Giving us some time to still enjoy each others company, go on a couple vacations, go to a couple concerts... Before we wont be able to do that for a while.  We already looked up when we should actively start trying.  We have about 8 months to get ready.  So I am asking for any advice possible.  Things like:

How much the new baby will cost for the first year

What I should be doing now to prep my body

I dunno anything.  We are both really excited and we are def planning for April but we will be happy if it happens sooner.

Right now we are both working two jobs and putting money from the second jobs aside.

I will probably do a lot of walking because working two jobs makes it hard to get to the gym.  I am pretty fit now, I found that after turned 23 my metabalism slowed down so I had to work to keep myself at the weight I am now.  I eat pretty healthy now for that reason.  I still have my junk food snacks though.  I make a lot of my food from scratch, home made pasta sauces and stuff like that.  I am trying to cut back on the cafine intake.  I have two cups a coffee a day now, before it was almost a whole pot!

Thanks in advance

  • HI and welcome,

Just an FYI, if you do it right, you'll still be able to do those things. Kids can travel, and babysitters are a godsend. Just something to think about.

How much a new baby will cost can vary so widely. It depends on whether you're going the budget route or going all out for said child, as well as what/how much grandparents and other family want to get you, etc. A good book is Baby Bargains, which lays out some of the things you need (and don't need) and gives ratings on different brands. Very helpful.

As for how to prep your body, it sounds like you're doing fine. Plenty of people just get pregnant without doing anything in the way of preparation, and they do just fine. It wouldn't hurt to start taking prenatal vitamins, for a variety of benefits.

You may also want to lurk on some of the boards and see if you can find some info there. I think the Trying to Get Pregnant board has an FAQ at the top that could answer some of your questions.

GL and don't get frustrated if it doesn't happen exactly when you plan.

  • Welcome, congrats on making a plan!  I didn't have one and thought because I was older, had a house, had a career, that everything else would fall in to place.  It would have been great to be a little more prepared (not that you are ever 100% prepared for a baby!).  How much money is the golden question, everyone is different.  If you have a babyshower, if you plan on breastfeeding, using disposable or cloth diapers, etc.  I wish I wasn't the "I need everything new for my new baby first time mom" because I could have saved tons of money if I would have considered buying/trading/asking for used items like I do now.  Freecycle.org has been a great tool for recycling and scooping up awesome gently used baby items.

As for your body, just eating healthier and taking prenatal vitamins and KEGELS.  I didn't do them before or during my first pregnancy, but did with my second one and could really see a difference.  They definitely can't hurt and I never even heard of them until my friend's mom told me about them.  Good luck with everything!
