I was just reading on here that getting multiple ultrasounds or unnecessry ultrasounds like the 3d/4d arn't always safe for the baby. I had a 3d/4d ultrasound and my Dr. was fine with it. She said they are perfectly fine to have . Her being pregnant herself was considering one. Anyone else read or told they were not safe?
Re: ultrasounds arn't always safe?
Locally, to get a 3 or 4d ultrasound it has to be approved by your doctor... My doctor said MRIs give cool pictures, and he'd love to see what he looked like if he were cut in half every day... But he doesn't order MRIs for the heck of it, so he won't approve an ultrasound for the heck of it. He said having more ultrasounds could be linked to autism. There are no studies I have found showing this, and he really just made me mad. I won't be using him next time! I know many people that are high risk and have LOTS of ultrasounds and the babies are fine... Or people years ago that didn't HAVE ultrasounds and their kids have autism! Ugh
Ultrasounds ARE safe.
The primary reason that only two are given in most normal pregnancies - one early on for dating and one at 20 weeks to check anatomy - is because insurance doesn't cover more than that and there is no real reason to get them more often unless there is a concern (measuring bigger/smaller than dates, suspected breech, etc).
This isn't always the case. Sometimes individuals who are just in the u/s business for the $$ do not follow guidelines and will do u/s longer than they are supposed or use substandard equipment which may rise the temperature for the fetus. While this is not the rule, it is most likely the exception, but still something that people should be aware of when looking at doing elective procedures.
It might be better to say that "There are no known risks when done properly".
Fair enough
this!
Take what you read on The Bump as a grain of salt. Do more research if you're worried but please don't take what random internet ladies say as truth.
They aren't "perfectly safe". There are no known risks yet. A lot of doctors are reluctant to hand out ultrasounds just for new facebook photos to post.
Also, the reason you only get 1-2 ultrasounds for a low-risk pregnancy is not because that's all insurance will cover.
I'm in Canada and doctors are still hesitant to hand out requisitions for ultrasounds that aren't necessary.
Your Dr.'s a quack...I would look for another Dr. after shlt like that came out of his mouth.
