NSAIFR: Are we crazy?

OK so we moved back in May to our new place, we rent and since DH's job froze pay raises back in 2008 we had to move this past spring from our apt we had been in for several years due the raise in rent being more than we could afford.

Heres the are we crazy question ok first a little back story:

DH's parents are buying a house it is a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath townhome with an awesome kitchen and backyard in a great neighborhood near where we live.  They want us to rent the place from them, basically they put so much down on the place that our rent will be lower than what we are paying now.  They will not raise our rent every year and we can live there as long as we'd like, they also said that if we wanted to purchase the home from them in a few years they would sell it to us.

We would have to break our current lease which my IL's have generously offered to pay the 3-4 thousand dollars it would cost for us to break our lease.

So am I crazy to move less than 6 months  after moving and with an infant to care for?

I will say that the logical part of my brain says move, it would provide a separate room for each of the boys a finished basement for them to play in and a backyard.  Right now we live in a 2bed 2bath apt in the third floor Fenton's outdoor space is the balcony, I have to get out every single day to the park etc in order for him to get some real excercise.

ETA:  if you know me on FB please don't post anything on my page about this thanks.

  • Ok...when I first started reading this I thought it was going to say "DH's parents are buying and house and want us to move in with them."  That, IMO, would be crazy.

Your situation sound like a good opportunity, and could work long term.  I'd do it.

A deal that good doesn't come along every day.  Take it!!

The addition of a backyard alone will make a huge difference.  Fenton will love it!

  • Not crazy at all! From Feb 2008 to October 2009 we moved 3 times each time I was pregnant. We rented an apartment but had to move because it was being sold well not even a month after we moved into a one bedroom that was supposed to be only for a year, we found I was having twins. We decided to try to wait it out to the end of the lease but we learned by the summer it was not going to work with double the baby gear. We broke the lease and moved! So we rented a half of house with 2 bedrooms (very small room could have been a 3rd bedroom but there was no heat in that room), we planned on staying there for a few years. We decided to have go ahead and try for 3rd and thought it could work for a year or so with the twins in one room and the baby in ours. Things started happening, the people we shared a yard with got a pretty nasty dog that bite me so that starting us thinking about moving when our lease was up in October (mind you I would be 8 months again AGAIN when moving). We decided screw it lets too at houses to buy. We found a 4 bedroom house in the town we wanted to live in. Best part was with the down payment our mortgage would LESS then what we paid in rent, although the taxes are different story!

Moving when your pregnant or have an infant ( I did with 11 months old twins) is doable. I say you have the chance, just do it!

Oh heck no I love my IL's (don't always get along with them but overall LOVE them very much) but I could NEVER live with them!

  • What happens to the townhome if you elect to not move it it? I'm assuming you've seen it and like it, etc. I'd feel weird if my ILs bought a house for us without getting our opinion first. I mean, if they are gonna buy us a place to live anyway, I'd want to pick it out myself.

    That being said...

I'd move in a hearbeat if I like the place (assuming I didn't feel strange about the situation). Sounds like a good deal to me!
