Dog sensing the baby..

I know it may sound odd, especially to non dog owners, but I swear our 2 year old Black lab knew I was pregnant even before I was.  He followed me everywhere, even into the bathroom and always wanted to be touching me.  He is a fairly affectionate dog, but I know something was def up and then a few days later we found out!  Since then he has been like my companion; he still follows me everywhere and is very interested in anything baby related that comes into the house.  Since I became pregnant it is pretty obvious he favors me over my DH as well.  What I have found the most adorable is now that the baby is moving and kicking non-stop, our dog lays his head on my belly and just listens.  If I ever lift up my shirt to look at my belly, he comes over and starts to kiss it.  Anyone else have the same experience with their pet?  I know I may be reading way too much into his behavior but I swear he is trying to bond with the baby already...it def makes me excited to see them "grow up" together :)

Re: Dog sensing the baby..

  • My two Corgi's don't act any differently.  However, I do expect that Jellie will be the "mother" and Beans will be the "protector" once the baby comes home.

  • My black lab has pretty much done the same thing as you black lab.  She is always following me and laying on me.  She lays at my feet when I am blow drying my hair.  It can be annoying and cute all at once.

Now my chocolate lab could care less!  but she is not as smart as my black lab! LOL!

  • My dog's clueless, I'm sure.  Lol.  But I just have to say that that's the sweetest thing that your dog lays his head on your belly and kisses it.  Animals are so amazing!

  • My black lab is a girl a and she is less interested in me now, unless I let her climb on top of me. She paws at my belly, then wants to get on the couch and and lay on top of me. She is 75lbs.so that is not an option. Maybe it has something to do with her being a female. I'm pretty sure she knows something is up though.
  • My black lab is completely uninterested in anything not related to duck hunting.

He had no clue with my first pregnancy either though.  He has taken my son's appearance in stride.  He avoids him at all costs unless there is food or we handing out affection and then he is right there in the thick of things.

We also went through a phase of my son handing him toys to put in his mouth after which he would try to hide somewhere to gnaw on it.  We quickly put a stop to that.

He will allow my son to "pet" him, but expects to be able to lick him all over in return. We are always close at hand though because sometimes the baby's "petting" involves the dog's face or neither regions and you can't really blame a dog for snapping when their eye is getting poked out or their balls are being squeezed.

  • My dad has an english Mastiff, if you don't already know, they are very large dogs. Just standing normally, her face is at my belly. A few times she has walked up and stuck her nose to my stomach sniffing. My BFF's cat loves to lay across my stomach since like 8 weeks.

My black lab is cute like this too. My yellow male couldn't care less. The black one goes in lays in the baby's room too, it's so cute. When we left on our trip 2 days ago I called my mom to check in and she said that Lucy, the black lab, waited by the door all day for us to come home. Then I started to cry haha. She was my first baby! I got her at 8 weeks old.

  • It is impossible to say what my dog's have responded to. Around the same time I got pregnant - we moved to the other side of the planet. Once they had never been on a plane, in the States, etc, etc. it could be anything that changed their behavior. But it has changed. Oreo is very protective of me and Noryang has turned on the snuggles -occasionally.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • That's so awesome!  I love labs.  I wish my Brittanies were like that.  They don't even seem to notice I'm pregnant!  The younger one tried to jump on my belly yesterday while I was laying down.  I'm scared one day I won't be able to stop him in time!

  • mine does! My older bigger female dog lays her head on my stomach all the time.

both my dogs come running if I make a noise, say ouch, or move from one room the the other. they lay outside the bathroom door when I shower, use the restroom ect. ( when DH had his accident they did this to him and he was so annoyed with them following him around, I told him welcome to my world)

my smaller dog is more of a cuddler now days too!

  • I've been so jealous all along of women with dogs who get it. My shep is barely a year old and still quite the baby herself... a big baby. :-p However, I think she is finally "aware." (Sniffing my belly, acting a little differently around me, etc.) She isn't as sweet and companionable as your lab, but I think that will come with age. My old dog was pretty independent until he was around three years old and then he was a wonderful companion and comforter. :)

    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • My yorkipoo is a living pregnancy test. With both pregnancies, she started following me around days before I got my BFP. Usually she is my DH's little girl, but when I am pregnant, she favors me. It lessens as the pregnancy goes, but she still acts differently towards me pregnant vs. not pregnant.

  • I have a yorkie and sometimes I am sure he knows and others not so much.  He usually sleeps curled up right next to my stomach on the body pillow and the other night I got up for a (routine) potty break.  Usually, he stays in bed and readjusts when I get situated, but that night he followed me to the bathroom and sat at the doorway, just waiting for me.  Then we went back to bed and he jumped up and stood at the end of the bed while I got back into my sleeping position and then he came and snuggled up to the belly again.  However, there are times when he is really barky and generally annoying as well.

  • Both of my dogs seem to know that something is going on with my belly.  The one lays his head on my belly when ever I sit down and the other one, who use to go crazy giving kisses and jumping around when I come home, now just sniffs my belly and wags his tail when I walk in the door!  I definitely think dogs can sense it when you're pregnant.  They both follow me around a lot more than usual now too.

  • The weird thing is I expected this to happen!  He is my DH's hunting partner so I thought naturally he wouldn't really care...but it seems to be the opposite.  He definitely wants me a lot more now except for when he knows DH is taking him somewhere!  But according to him, his hunting instincts haven't changed at all when he is out in the field.  Obviously we haven't had the baby yet so I will be interested to see what he is like with all the toys.  I'm more worried about the baby clothes.  Tucker (our lab) is such a sock thief...he will dig through laundry just to steal them and then will hide or bury them...I can't imagine what that will be like with little teeny socks! lol

I'm not worried about his interaction with the baby though.  We have an 8 month old nephew and an 18 month old niece and he is so sweet and gentle with them both.  He needs to be close to them, almost protective.  And when they cry he tried to soothe them...so sweet!  I think it also helped that as a puppy we got him used to things that kids might do.  The best advice I ever got from another dog owner was to start them young with getting used to a child.  We played with his ears, his tail, his paw, his food...we even put our hands in his mouth.  Now you could basically do anything to him and he just sits there.  He knows if a hand goes in his mouth he just sits down with his jaw wide open and waits for you to get out...the vet loves it lol!
