I know it may sound odd, especially to non dog owners, but I swear our 2 year old Black lab knew I was pregnant even before I was. He followed me everywhere, even into the bathroom and always wanted to be touching me. He is a fairly affectionate dog, but I know something was def up and then a few days later we found out! Since then he has been like my companion; he still follows me everywhere and is very interested in anything baby related that comes into the house. Since I became pregnant it is pretty obvious he favors me over my DH as well. What I have found the most adorable is now that the baby is moving and kicking non-stop, our dog lays his head on my belly and just listens. If I ever lift up my shirt to look at my belly, he comes over and starts to kiss it. Anyone else have the same experience with their pet? I know I may be reading way too much into his behavior but I swear he is trying to bond with the baby already...it def makes me excited to see them "grow up" together
Re: Dog sensing the baby..
My black lab has pretty much done the same thing as you black lab. She is always following me and laying on me. She lays at my feet when I am blow drying my hair. It can be annoying and cute all at once.
Now my chocolate lab could care less! but she is not as smart as my black lab! LOL!
My black lab is completely uninterested in anything not related to duck hunting.
He had no clue with my first pregnancy either though. He has taken my son's appearance in stride. He avoids him at all costs unless there is food or we handing out affection and then he is right there in the thick of things.
We also went through a phase of my son handing him toys to put in his mouth after which he would try to hide somewhere to gnaw on it. We quickly put a stop to that.
He will allow my son to "pet" him, but expects to be able to lick him all over in return. We are always close at hand though because sometimes the baby's "petting" involves the dog's face or neither regions and you can't really blame a dog for snapping when their eye is getting poked out or their balls are being squeezed.
My dad has an english Mastiff, if you don't already know, they are very large dogs. Just standing normally, her face is at my belly. A few times she has walked up and stuck her nose to my stomach sniffing. My BFF's cat loves to lay across my stomach since like 8 weeks.

I don't believe that God ever tells us "no". he has three options. Yes, not right now, or I have something better in mind. We just have to wait & see.
My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy. Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.
mine does! My older bigger female dog lays her head on my stomach all the time.
both my dogs come running if I make a noise, say ouch, or move from one room the the other. they lay outside the bathroom door when I shower, use the restroom ect. ( when DH had his accident they did this to him and he was so annoyed with them following him around, I told him welcome to my world)
my smaller dog is more of a cuddler now days too!
I've been so jealous all along of women with dogs who get it. My shep is barely a year old and still quite the baby herself... a big baby. :-p However, I think she is finally "aware." (Sniffing my belly, acting a little differently around me, etc.) She isn't as sweet and companionable as your lab, but I think that will come with age. My old dog was pretty independent until he was around three years old and then he was a wonderful companion and comforter.
The weird thing is I expected this to happen! He is my DH's hunting partner so I thought naturally he wouldn't really care...but it seems to be the opposite. He definitely wants me a lot more now except for when he knows DH is taking him somewhere! But according to him, his hunting instincts haven't changed at all when he is out in the field. Obviously we haven't had the baby yet so I will be interested to see what he is like with all the toys. I'm more worried about the baby clothes. Tucker (our lab) is such a sock thief...he will dig through laundry just to steal them and then will hide or bury them...I can't imagine what that will be like with little teeny socks! lol
I'm not worried about his interaction with the baby though. We have an 8 month old nephew and an 18 month old niece and he is so sweet and gentle with them both. He needs to be close to them, almost protective. And when they cry he tried to soothe them...so sweet! I think it also helped that as a puppy we got him used to things that kids might do. The best advice I ever got from another dog owner was to start them young with getting used to a child. We played with his ears, his tail, his paw, his food...we even put our hands in his mouth. Now you could basically do anything to him and he just sits there. He knows if a hand goes in his mouth he just sits down with his jaw wide open and waits for you to get out...the vet loves it lol!
