Breastfeeding

New to board w/ breastfeeding cover question

Hi everyone, I received as a gift one of those large covers for breastfeeding in public. While it is pretty, it seems large and cumbersome. Do you find them to be helpful, or do you simply use something else (or nothing at all) when breastfeeding in public?

  • Sometimes I will use a receiving blanket but most of the time I don't bother. I feel more discreet without a cover actually. Every time I use one I feel like it screams "HEY! LOOK AT ME! I'M BREASTFEEDING OVER HERE!" Whereas when I go without hardly anyone even notices we're doing it.

Even if you want to cover up, I never saw the point in spending money on a "nursing cover" when a receiving blanket can do the job just as well and you probably already have a ton of them.

  • I like my nursing cover. It's helpful because I don't own any nursing tops other than tanks. So I have to lift my shirt up. I also like that I don't have to worry about a blanket falling down.

  • I really like mine because I can still see her while I nurse covered. When she was younger I needed to see her to help her latch. Now she needs to see me or she rips the cover off trying to find me.

I had a smaller one (an udder cover) but I really prefer my bigger one (bebe au lait)

  • I've never used a cover. Once in awhile I'll use the end of a sling, or a blanket, but it's been rare. I find that most people don't notice or say anything, and I think it's my job as a nursing mother to normalize breastfeeding in public by, well, breastfeeding in public...

I agree that nothing says "I'm doing something under here!" like a giant piece of colorful fabric.

  • I liked the cover at first because it's easier to keep it on while you're adjusting and you can kind of see what you're doing better than with an actual blanket.  There are times when I wanted to cover up because otherwise there would have been a lot of exposure and/or spraying when she unlatched.

Now, I still use it once in a while, but mostly don't use anything at all, or will just use a blanket to cover up if I need.  DD gets kind of mad when I use the cover and tries to rip it off her head.

  • I don't use anything to cover.  I wear a nursing tank and a regular shirt, so when I lift my shirt up, my stomach is still covered.  Works great.

  • Thanks so much for all of the feedback. I may keep it (with the gift receipt) and see if I actually use it.

  • I don't see myself breastfeeding that much in public. I have used it around family. They know I am bfing and it keeps me covered easily. I used it in the car twice yesterday - my windows were tinted but I wanted the coverage.

    I have the bebe one.

  • I love my cover (bebe au lait) and use it all the time. I've tried using a blanket, but baby rips it away within seconds. I've tried nursing without a cover, but I can't quite get the hang of it without flashing the world. If you're like me, you'll appreciate the generous amount of fabric, the structured top to look down at baby, and the loop to put around your neck to hold it up.

     This entirely.

My LO finds it distracting actually. I used a blanket a few times but each time she wanted it off because she could hear everything and wanted to know where it was coming from. At least that's my theory on why she kept playing with the blanket.

If I'm in a "touchy" situation I will turn my back and latch her, then resume conversation.

I've also found that some shirts with generous necklines work well, not just button up shirts. That way I can literally pull down the shirt with the bra and go from there.

  • When she was little, I could just use a blanket, but as she got bigger and more mobile the nursing cover became much more useful.

    This is me too.

I also use the cover because I pump while driving (and it's hard to keep a blanket on unless you use hair-clips to hook it to the tank straps.  Which I've done :)

My child was distractable from day 1.  She will pull her head away and look around the room and leave my boobs swinging in the wind.  She'll grab a blanket (and the cover) and trh to get rid of it.  We can NOT get the knack of nursing modestly.  Cover was al ife saver  for me.

  • I find them very cumbersome, I even struggle with a blanket sometimes because I don't like covering my LO's head. I also think that covers draw more attention to the fact that I am breastfeeding. I use nothing when I breastfeed unless I am with people who are really uncomfortable with it and even then I only cover up while she latches. Some people get really good at using them though if you are uncomfortable. =)

  • I use my cover a lot for for NIP.  It's easy to use anywhere, gives me more of a sense of privacy and I like being able to check in on LBB through the opening.

In addition, a lot of times my NIP is in an open outdoor area (the trail by my house or a park) and the cover serves as both protection from the sun and wind which makes eating easier for him.

This is us exactly. I have the bebe au lait also and it worked great until DS got to be about 6 months. Now he doesn't like the cover either and pulls it off, and also continues to pop off the boob all the time. I have pretty much given up NIP b/c I don't like exposing my nipples to the world.

  • I have always used a receiving blanket or cloth diaper to cover up when nursing where others could see.  As a working mama, I pump at work and use the nursing cover when I sometimes pump on my 1 hr commute.

This!  I just wear a tank top and nursing bra under my top and pull the top up and the tank top and bra down to nurse.  I don't use a cover.
