Who has taken LO to Disney World?

I know I posted this before, but I went in my discussions and cannot find it :-(

We want to take DD, who will be almost 2, to Disney world in March 2012. Wondering if you have been with a LO and where is best to stay......convenient as far as resort? close to transportation because we are considering not renting a car? resorts with restaurants right at them, so we can just eat there is we want?

Thanks!

Re: Who has taken LO to Disney World?

  • If you stay on Disney property, you will have free transportation to anywhere on the Disney campus, and the resorts also all have food options available.  But, you could also hop on the busses (which I think run until 1-2am) and head to Downtown Disney which has a TON of food options as well.

We went for a weekend in June with DD and didn't even go to a theme park and had a great time (we were there for my cousins' gymnastic meet).  We stayed at the All-Star Sports Resort.

  • You can't go wrong with staying on WDW property.  You can get free transportation from the airport right to your resort.  There is resort transportation to all the parks, whether it be bus, boat or monorail.  If you do end up renting a car, and stay on their property, then parking is free at the hotels and parks.  All of their resorts have places to eat, some more "food court'ish" (at the value) all the way to sit down (moderate and deluxe resorts.)

     Here's a helpful site:

  • We have been 4 times with DD and twice with DS.  As the previous poster mentioned, there is bus transportation throughout WDW so it is fairly easy to get around.

In my opinion, the best hotel for a young child is one on the monorail system (so the Polynesian, the Contemporary or the Grand Floridian).  All of these resorts are deluxe resorts though and are a bit expensive.  The Contemporary is really nice because you can walk to the Magic Kingdom in about 5 minutes and don't have to bother waiting for the monorail/bus when you come out of the park after a long day.

If you decide to stay off-site, I would definitely rent a car.

    HTH!

  • We just went in September. We stayed off property at the Orlando World Center Marriott, which is down the street from Disney. We saw the fireworks every night from our room is was so close. We did rent a car though, the hotel has shuttles to and from the property as well.

This was the choice we made because we couldn't justify spending so much to stay at a WDW resort when we could be pretty much just as close for a fraction of the price.

  • We just came back on the 10th. We had a ton of fun and DS LoVED the rides and characters, but I won't sugar coat it for you- it was HARD with a toddler! We stayed at the ALL star movie resort so we had to take a bus everywhere. I agree with a PP who said if you can stay on the monorail at one of those resorts then it will make your life easier. You can take a monorail from there to Magic Kingdom and Epcot and only have to worry about busses for a few places. Plus you can wheel the stroller right onto the monorail with kid in it versus the bus where strollers had to be folded. DS didn't understand why he had to sit on our laps on the buses an why he couldn't get down and run around. Same with waiting in lines for rides. He just wanted to go go go! I did end up using a backpack harness for him to walk around safely but there were some major fits on buses and ride lines when we had TI hold him near us. My advice is to go with the flow, allow for naps ( we were lucky that DS would often just conk out in the stroller. Otherwise it would have been a several hour trip back to the hotel to nap then get back to a park) and try to stick to a normal routine regarding bedtimes, meals, etc. Its hard when you are somewhere like Disney to ignore bedtime and just go go go. We didn't put DS to bed at his normal 7:30 time but didn't keep him up too late so we didn't have a cranky kid on our hands. Oh and I you can swing it financially the other good thing about staying at one of the delux resorts is that the rooms have balconies- a lifesaver when your LO is napping or down for the night!

  • I will third or fourth the monorail rec.

We just got back 2 wks ago and stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. We loved it and the animals were so close that my DD and nieces adored it, but each of us had at least one bad experience waiting for a shuttle bus (there were 10 of us total).

I would also rec if you stay in the park to get the dining plan. It made our lives a whole lot easier and I think if LO is under 2, they're free. So you pay for you and your H and then LO can eat your food. We used our snacks to get DD milk for the mornings, etc. It seemed to work really well for us and kept us well fed.

We also got DD's first haircut in the Magic Kingdom at the Barber Shop. It was so cute!
