Dryer Balls?

I'm switching over our laundry supplies to be baby friendly... I've got some All Free and Clear Detergent.  I read you're not supposed to use fabric softener/dryer sheets on baby clothes b/c of the interaction with flame retardant protection.

I'm also trying to keep things dye and fragrance free... I ready about these dryer balls that you throw into the dryer.  I think they work by bouncing around with the laundry and don't deposit any chemicals, etc.  Does anybody use these?  Is that how they work?  Would you recommend them?

 Thanks!

Re: Dryer Balls?

  • I used them before and will get some again but I've heard tennis balls work the same way - but I think tennis balls stink!  I used them with my son and will buy some again soon - we use Bounce sheets now but I need to buy the dryer balls since I will be doing LO's laundry in a few months.

  • You can purchase pure wool dryer balls on etsy or make your own usuing wool yarn.  It's very simple to do albeit time consuming.  But dryer balls cut down on drying time, eliminate static,  and you can put essential oils on them to give your clothes a nice scent.  There has also been studies in which scented dryer sheets have been shown to emit carcinogens, so you may just want to make the switch to dryer balls for all of your clothes.

  • We started using them a few weeks ago (blue spikey balls bought at Joanns Fabrics) They really help keep my dhs dress shirts wrinkle free and ready to wear. I dont think they really soften anything, but the wrinkle help is a plus.

  • Hey, these are probably what you're looking for. Sometimes babysteals has them on sale: https://buddhabunz.com/store/Default.asp
  • My parents have been using the store bought blue ones for a number of years and really like them.  On the occasions I've done laundry at their home with them, everything has turned out great, even towels.  We plan on making some once the baby arrives for the same reasons you mentioned.

We bought some of the blue ones at Bed Bath and Beyond over four years ago and have been using them instead of fabric softener ever since. They work great.
