Cord Wrapped Around Neck?

Okay, I  know I am probably inviting myself to be completely flamed but I keep watching all of these baby shows where people have C-Sections for various reasons (multiples, high blood pressure..etc...we all know there are a million reasons to do a C-Section). Anyway, what's freaking me out is that in all of these shows it seems like the poor baby always has the freekin cord wrapped around his/her neck!

If the reason for C-Section was BECAUSE the cord was wrapped around the neck, then I would shrug off the show but it seems like this is never the case. The C-Section is always for a completely different reason then it always turns into "oh, good thing we had a C-Section because the cord was wrapped around the neck 3 times)"

WTF.

Am I the only one worried about this? Am I being stupid and need to stop watching these shows?

Re: Cord Wrapped Around Neck?

  • I havent watched any baby shows, but i have to admit that this is pry my biggest delivery fear.

  • My cousin was born vaginally and had the cord wrapped around his neck. He is fine and healthy. But yes it is a scary thing to think that it might happen. You really can worry yourself sick over what could happen. I would stop watching the shows.

  • The cord is stretchy, more like an elastic necklace than a rope. I think it has to wrap around a LOT to be dangerous. I think DH said that the doc slipped the cord away from DD's neck too.

  • Babies can have it around their neck even with a vag delivery. They will just unwrap it while asking for you to stop pushing for a second. It's not super uncommon. Of course it can be an issue, but I think it's just another thing that can happen. Nothing to worry about.
  • Its actually a lot more common than you think. Put it out of your head, its an awful thing to worry about because there is nothing you can do to prevent it. (besides not raising your hands over your head, of course! hahaha)
  • I remember an episode of a Baby Story where the cord was wrapped around the neck and she delivered vaginally and everything was fine.

  • I've never been one to worry about too much, but for some reason, lately, when I watch a show or read something online about that kind of stuff, I can't help but worry about certain things.  I need to stop watching some of those shows and stop reading too much.
  • I think it happens a lot more than we know (DH was born with it wrapped around his neck and he was fine).  The Drs. know how to deal with it.  I try not to worry about things I can't control (easier said than done).

Thanks so much for the advice. I will definitely start working on that! hahaha

Thanks everyone, you all make me feel better about it. It just freaks me out. Definitely need to stop watching those shows.
