Milk Protein Sensitivity - new to the journey

I call it a "journey" because that is what it is starting to feel like!  DS was diagnosed with possible milk protein sensitivity after having green stools with a small amount of blood in them.  Peditrician advised to avoid all milk protein (including hidden) which I have been doing for almost two weeks (it will be two weeks Saturday).

Initially, I saw an improvement in DS' stools, they turned yellow, no longer had blood, but were still mucousy.  However, starting on Sunday he started having the green mucous poops again, there is no blood, but they look really bad, huge amounts of dark green mucous.  He also started having cold symptoms (stuffy nose) - he's had these off and on forever and I'm almost positive its part of the food allergy deal.

Looking back at my food diary I thought possibly the setback was caused by either dark chocolate that I thought was dairy free or fat free Pringles (which are dairy free but contain Olestra which could be a problem?).  However, the last time I had dark chocolate was on Sunday and things are still looking bad diaper wise and cold symptom wise.  Now I am worried I may have to cut out soy also and am wondering if I should just go ahead and do that or wait it out a few more days to see if things improve.  Pedi said to call in three weeks if not resolved.  I really want to keep breastfeeding!

Re: Milk Protein Sensitivity - new to the journey

  • No advice, but I was wondering the same thing. I've only been dairy free for a few days, so I know I shouldn't expect to see improvement yet. But today LO is worse than ever -- more mucus in his poops, stuffy nose, etc. I was wondering if it is a "gets worse before it gets better" thing? I feel like I'm constantly questioning what I'm eating.

I went ahead and cut out soy at the same time because our pedi said so many with sensitivities to milk are also sensitive to soy. You could try that and see if it makes a difference?

  • The muscous could be just that, a cold. That would cause my LO to have loose stools as well as teething. It takes a full two weeks to see improvements. I assume you are BFing. Ghiaradelli 80% cocoa I had the best luck with as far as dairy free.

IMO, I would avoid Olestra and "fat free" things at all. "fat free" usually have subs to keep the flavor. Some great chips are Food Should be Good corn chips and Garden of Eatin' (my favorite are blue hots)

Try to eat as Whole and Organic as possible to avoid GMO's and other additives.

GL in your journey. It is a Journey that does take time but after navigating a few months it will be easier.
