Babies: 6 - 9 Months

are you giving juice to your LO?

My 7 1/2 mon old hasn't been drinking as much milk in the past 2-3 weeks.  She drinks about 18oz formula and 2  3oz solids per day.  She's never been a big eater anyway.  My MIL wants to start giving her juice.  I haven't given it to LO because I figured she needs to drink as much milk as she can get (since she seems to below avg on milk intake at her age) and I thought giving her juice would take away from her nutrition.

So, should I bother with juice and how much juice are you giving your LO?

Re: are you giving juice to your LO?

  • Juice just isn't very nutritious, so LO won't be getting any until at least 1, probably 2yrs old, and then diluted and only on occasion. DH and & drink primarily water, so I don't see why we would give juice to LO.

The only exception is when DD was constipated and got a little prune juice.

  • by milk, do you mean BM? I was told no milk (cows milk) until age 1.  Juice is ok once LO is eating fruits, but it's not going to help at all, nutritionally.  We use it for constipation, but probably won't give it to P as a regular "drink" until he's a bit older.

  • Our oldest was pushing 3 years before he got any.  There's no real reason to give any.  Even now he doesn't get it regularly.  It's a treat or it's V8 fusion stuff.
  • our ped said no juice (every if we can).  She said its full of sugar and kids need to get used to the taste of water.

  • I see your little one is 7mth, so it's ok for her to have juice, but my ped said only 2oz a day...so definitely not to replace any BM or formula!
My little guy will be 8mths tomorrow, and he still hasn't taken much juice, he doesn't like how cold it is!

  • Our pedi said no juice. I don't plan to give him any until he's at least one, and only if he asks for it (we drink water, so there's never juice in the house, so he won't know what he's missing unless we go somewhere).

  • There is no benefit of juice imo, so even now my almost 3 year-old only gets it on special occasions.  I don't need the dental bill!  :)  Feeding whole fruits and drinking water or formula/bm are plenty and more nutritious.

This. A small amount of juice for constipation only.

  • Me an my little man just went through this. About a week ago we was barely taking15oz. a day. I called pedi freaking out because he has had such issue with weight gain in the past (reflux & milk protien issues). But she told me that as long as he wasn't acting sick, lathargic, or anyother symptoms to just moniter him and call her back in a few days if it did not get any better. She told me to Not substitute juice for formula and that if I was really concerned to try an cut out a meal of soilds and only give milk.

Rest assured. He did get better and he is now up to his "usual" amount around 28-30oz. a day. Then I noticed my little mister had cut a new top tooth. I'm thinking thats why he wasn't wanting a bottle it must have been too tender on his little gums.

But, when I did ask pedi about juice she said it is not necessary for babies under  1 to receive juice unless contipated/dehydrated. I don't think juice will take away from her nutrition but it might want to make her drink less formula/bm?

  • You may want to hold off on the solids until she starts drinking more formula. Minimum formula/milk intake at her age should be 24 oz. Solids do not provide much in the way of nutrition so you're better off getting her to eat enough formula first and then adding solids back in.

We are not planning on giving juice. He won't be forbidden to have it but it won't be something that we buy or keep on hand. And 7.5 months is too young to give juice, especially when she's not drinking enough formula.

    Aaaaand I third.

Our pedi also said that juice is worthless nutrition-wise and that the sugar is unnecessary and may make them reject water or milk later on. So I'll keep her off juice for a while.

  • My dr also said no to the juice. Too much sugar. The only time I would offer it if we had a problem with constipation.

The only thing we offer to DD other than formula is maybe an ounce or two of water in her sippy to practice with.
