Texas Children's Hospital Katy or Downtown?

I live in Austin but grew up in Houston. My 3mth old has been having some issues and the Childrens hospital here wasn't able to help so we want a second option. The Katy campus was not there when we where living there.

Which campus do you suggest? Is there really any difference besides parking being free at Katy and you have to pay downtown?

TIA, we are headed that way this morning.

  • If you get this in time, The one is Katy is much easier to get into/out of and you don't have to deal the the mess downtown like construction and the traffic. heck, they even have a person driving around in a gold cart to pick up and drop people off at their cars!

  • Facilities matter less to me than the talent they hold. Obviously, the facility needs to have the right equipment - beyond that it is the talent that matters. You can always start at one place and end up somewhere else (like in your case), if the issue needs a different opinion.

Friends with complex situations have gone across hospitals to get answers from the right individuals. Sometimes that can take time to find that person or team.

My pediatrician usually guides us based on the specialist we need and her own opinions. I think she keeps up on who is working where to inform the choice.

Does your pediatrician have a preference or recommendation?

Good luck. TCH has good care. Memorial/Hermann also has a Children's Hospital to mine, if you need more. I hope it is nothing serious or is something that get put right quickly.

  • I have had some very bad experiences At TX children's downtown and I would avoid going there at all costs. I have a 14 year old and a 14 month old. I have been taking my son there since he was an infant. Last year he has 2 seizures & the first time they sent us home w/o doing any tests & asked my son if he was being abused! I was furious as they also told me I didn't know what a seizure looks like! The 2nd time he had a seizure, I took him to his Dr. who is affiliated w/TX Childrens Hospital. She refused to call an ambulance from her office after he had a seizure then had vomiting & diaherria which started in her office! They forced him to wait 8 hours in ER vomiting on himself w/diaherria when no other kids were waiting & my Dr. called in ahead for us! I had to scream like a maniac to get them to see him & the nurses were extremely rude! When they finally called him back he vomited all over the nurses who had told me nothing was wrong with him! They kept him over a week (I stayed w/him 5 months pregnant) & never found out what caused his seizures! His Dr. tried to lecture about being rude to staff! I reported them all to the patient advocate & the Joint Commission that oversees hospitals! Herman isn't much better but it's always empty because they don't take charity cases. Herman valets will STEAL EVERYTHING IN YOUR CAR and damage it!
  • I had a great experience at the Katy location when we had to treat my 5 day old baby for jaundice.  We were taken in through the ER.

I live much closer to the med center but drove to Katy for faster service, free parking, etc. The days we were there, there were only 4 other patients in the entire hospital.   This was 2 months ago.
