opt out of flu shot

We want to opt out of the flu vaccine for my 3 year old. where is the letter that opts out based on religious reasons? Anyone opt out based on religious reasons?

Did you have any problems with the school district?

Please let me know if there is a website with a letter to send to the school.

Thanks.

Re: opt out of flu shot

  • Does your district require the flu shot for preschoolers / under age 5?  What is the reason you want to opt out?  I am not one of those "any vaccine is a good vaccine," people, but Flu can be devestating for a 3 year old.

I would talk to your pedi.  If there is a medical concern you have about the shot, maybe they can write a note to the district.  Also, is the flu mist (vs. vaccine) available for 3 year olds?  My kids get the mist (vs. the shot), but our pedi only provides it to children 6+

  • Where I live(Michigan) the flu vaccine does not require a waiver, it's a voluntary shot; so no waiver is required for that one.   You could just call your school district to see if it requires a waiver.
  • Many vaccinations are required for kids to enter school, but the flu vaccine isn't one of them, usually.

Before you go to the trouble of a waiver letter, make sure that the school or school system actually requires the flu vaccine.

The flu vaccine isn't required here either and is optional - That said, I'll take my chances with the flu than most everyone in the family who has ever gotten one ends up out of work for a week because of a reaction to something in the shot and/or spray in and of itself.

In the state of NJ, children under the age of five enrolled in nursery school / daycare are required to have the flu shot.  Obviously, it is different in different states, but it is mandatory, not optional.

  • I never opt to get the flu shot for my children or myself.  We are not a family that gets sick easily.  And if someone does get ill, it lasts maybe 2-3 days at the most.  The one time I was forced to get the flu shot (in the Army), I was so sick I thought I was dying.  It was pretty bad.  I had to take off from work for half the week.  I swore never to get that again, and I haven't.
