Diaper rash and strawberries?

DD has a HORRIBLE diaper rash that is really ANGRY today. I am starting to think it is from giving her strawberries three days in a row for part of her breakfast. She seemed a bit raw yesterday, but nothing at all like today. Needless to say, I am laying off the strawberries and will probably only give her banana for fruit so she doesn't have anything acidic. Has anyone else had this problem of a diaper rash after giving your LO an acidic fruit or certain food? I can't remember her having a problem with strawberries before, but maybe it is because I gave them to her so many days in a row. TIA for your thoughts and input. I feel terrible because she is in pain when I change her;(

  • Yes, I've noticed it after he eats tomatoes/spaghetti sauce/sausage and peppers...must be the acidity in the tomatoes.

  • Yeah, our pedi said that strawberries can cause bad diaper rashes.

Thanks, that makes me feel a bit more confident that I am thinking that's where it's from. Hopefully it will be gone in the next couple of days since we won't be giving her anymore.

  • Both of my boys have trouble with citrus. We eat a lot of applesauce, bananas, and blueberries.
  • Maybe she has an allergy to them.  I have heard that a diaper rash can be the result of a food allergy.

  • YES!!!! DD had a really brutal diaper rash for months, literally, and I tried everything to no avail. Finally I cut out all fruits and tomatoes... and the rash was gone. Since then I've slowly introduced a fruit at a time to see which she reacts to and which are fine. Strawberries do NOT work for us (even a small bite is a disaster). It's been a year and now I know which foods she cannot have... instant rash.
  • Acidic foods often cause diaper rashes, as do allergies

Wholesomebabyfoods says "Citric fruits may cause a reaction or an intolerance in infants due to the acidity of the fruit. The infant does not react with an immune response rather the infant reacts with either a gastrointestinal response or a dermatological response. Often times infants who are fed oranges prior to the age of 1 will break out in rashes around the mouth or bottom and possibly have tummy cramps."
