Too many baby clothes?

Experienced moms... did your LO wear all their baby clothes? Did you have enough/too many?

I have a huge generous family handing down used (nice) clothes, buying this child wardrobes of new clothes, and the child is 19w in womb.  I haven't even had a baby shower. I guess I should take the extras and donate them once LO is born and I see what I really need.  I shouldn't complain, but I'd like to do a little shopping myself and I am running out of room!

Re: Too many baby clothes?

  • I got so much clothing as gifts I only used about 1/2 of what I got... but I loved having more than I needeed!  I also bought a few things for DD that I just really liked :)  One thing I NEVER had enough of is pajamas... people just don't think to buy that stuff!

  • DS wore most of his baby clothes (baby to me is up to 9 months maybe).  We didn't have many newborn outfits & that was good for us...DS was almost 9lbs.  If you have a child that spits up a lot though, you will use a lot no matter how big they are.

If you really love an outfit & want to buy it, I would.  You don't have to use every hand-me-down outfit.

  • I liked to dress DD in actually outfits, so I liked that people gave us clothes. Generally we only had a few outfits we didn't use but I really made a conscious effort to put her in all the outfits we had. It's actually now that she is in bigger sizes (12-18mos) that we don't have as many clothes. And like pp said, jammies! Can always use the jammies.

  • you could also take the extra to once upon a child or something like that and use the credit to get something else they need or just get the cash and put it in a college fund or something.

  • I would keep them until LO comes. That way if you need them you have them. Even if you leave them in a box. My cousin got a bunch of clothes and underestimated how much she would need. She gave a bunch of them away and now is wishing she would have kept them. I plan on going thru everything we get and put everything away according to sizes. And then buy for the size I am lacking.

  • We used most of it, but for DD we didn't receive too many hand-me-downs. My suggestion would be that if you see things you like- buy bigger sizes. When people give you clothes as gifts, they tend to give you newborn, 0-3, or 3-6 month stuff. Buy the older sizes if you see something cute so that when your LO hits a year you won't have to buy an entire wardrobe for the toddler years.

  • p is only 9 mns but has grown like a weed (he's already in 18 & 24mn clothes) so we blew through clothes up to 12mn size or so. i'm pretty minimal (i only bought nice outfits for a particular event-so maybe a handful) but he wore the daylights out of things we got as gifts or hand me downs from my sil. i think we had less than 10newborn outfits & he wore them for about 1.5mns so i did frequently have to do laundry, etc but we didnt have the room or see the purpose in him having a ton of cloths he'd grow out of quickly. if you're already receiving things as gifts i'd certainly hang on to them, you never know how quickly or slowly they'll grow or even how soon after you'd have more children who could use them.

  • With my boys I find that I never have just enough and with my daughter, of course, I had enough for two babies...the gifts and hand-me-downs are just so much more abundant for girls!
