C-sections

spinal vs. epi

What did you have during your c-section and what was your experience like?

With DS1 I had been in labor so I had an epi. I just felt really sleepy during my c-section and was having a hard time staying awake. I was relaxed and very comfortable.

With DS2 I had a spinal. I was alert but felt horrible. I was really dizzy and felt like I was going to puke during the c-section. They gave me meds to help but I still felt pretty horrible. I'm wondering if I felt so horrible the second time because of the spinal or just because that's how things worked out and if I should request an epi this time.

Re: spinal vs. epi

  • I had an epi since I labored first and it was already in.  This time, I asked my ob, and she said that I will end up with whatever the anestesiologist is best at.  Makes complete sense to me lol.

  • Call me clueless here, but I didn't think they administered Epi's for c-sections. I thought just spinals. (for scheduled c sections anyway) I had a spinal and had no problems. I didn't feel a thing when they administered it.

  • I had an epi but it had been in place for quite a while because I was induced almost 24 hours before my c-section. I don't remember feeling much of anything during the surgery. I know that it started to fade when the OB was stitching me back up but the anesthesiologist was excellent and adjusted the meds appropriately to keep me comfortable!

  • I may be silly, but I was really afraid to be paralyzed...  The epi scared me so much and I felt it took me longer to start feeling better.  I got a spinal two weeks ago and I loved it.  I had a little bit of nausea, but they gave me something right away that stopped it almost instantly.  Personally, I would go with the spinal again.

  • During my induction, I had a bad reaction the to the Epi. My blood pressure dropped and DSs h/r went from 130s to 60s. I was then given something to counteract it. Right before my Emerg. C/S, I was given the spinal. No reactions whatsoever.

  • With my first son I had a epi. Then I had an emergency C so they put more meds in . I had the worst headache ever. With my second son I had a spinal. I was able to move around a lot better after him than with my first. I think it just depends on the person and the amount of meds they use.

For baby #3 Im asking for a spinal.

  • I got a spinal. Painless. I did feel like i was going to puke, but only right after they got the babies out. and when i told them i felt sick, i faintly remeber them saying, "lower the magnesium!" I have no idea what that is, but i think it is what made me sick. I dont think it was from the spinal.

  • With my first DS I had a spinal. I went through maybe 5 hours of contractions and we decided to just do c-section for personal reasons. The spinal, I went numb from breast to toe fairly quickly. I didn't even know what was happening behind the curtain because I couldn't feel a thing. I did get a spinal headache, they gave me a dose of morphine and lar. tab. I was too out of my mind to realize what was going on with all those drugs. I know with my 2nd child, I will have to have another c-section and I will probably ask for a spinal again.
