Babies: 0 - 3 Months

non stop hands in the mouth

LO is almost 4 months old, and constantly has his hands in his mouth!! He even sometimes pushes the bottle out to put his hands in. What gives? He even stuck his hand down so far once, he threw up ALL over himself, my husband, the couch, and the floor!

He also drools alot. My mom says he is probably in early teething. Anyone else have this experience?? I'm pretty sure he is just "finding his hands", but its been going on for so long that i'm begininng to this my mom might be right.

Re: non stop hands in the mouth

  • I have had the exact same experience with my son. Id love to tell you that it ends, but so far im going on about 4 months and it hasn't ended. I would say that its teething. Babies can teeth for months before popping out a tooth. My son 'teethed' for 2 months before popping out any teeth. It was constant drool, hands in the mouth (or absolutely anything he could find) and he was getting diaper rash alot more often. Then one night he screamed his head off for 3 and a half hours-nothing would soothe him. The next morning, he had his very first tooth! And the morning after that, BAM he had another one :) He started teething about 3-4 months (corrected age) and only popped out his teeth at 6 months (corrected age). Both FH and I had a tooth at 4 months so it is not uncommon.

Try teething rings. I avoided baby orajel as much as possible as they say it toughens the gums. He got the orajel maybe once every 1-2 weeks. He wasn't a cranky teether (until he popped the teeth out). Also, since the 2 teeth have popped out, he has another one coming in as well and he hasn't stopped with the finger in his mouth or drooling. Just be careful-my son sticks his fingers so far down his throat he makes himself throw up. We have to keep an eye on him now to make sure he doesn't stick them in his mouth-or atleast to far down. We have to hold his hands down or bundle him in order to feed him as he would preferr his fingers then his food.

Baby Lukas-My miracle baby! 3 months preemie! Overcame 5 surgeries, 4 months in the NICU, 7 blood transfusions, PDA, chronic lung disease, 2 ventilars, 1 cpap, nasal prongs and then finally decided to breath on his own. Weighed in at 2lbs 6oz and now a *WOOPING* 20lbs at 9 and a half months old (6 and a half corrected)

  • My LO has been doing this for the past 2 weeks or so. She will even push my nip out of her mouth so she can suck on her hand! She gets her whole fist in there, it's nuts! She's also drooling like a crazy person and when I asked her pedi at her 2 mo appt he said it is possible early teething and that babies have been known to cut teeth even this early, although that's very rare.

  • My DS has also found his hands and seems to love them more than anything...and the drool is non-stop! I asked his pedi about this at his 2-month appointment and she said although it is too early for actual teething, a lot of babies go through what she called "phantom symptoms" starting around 2 months. Oh boy!

  • My lo does this as well. The craziest thing is he gnaws so much at his hands that he actually has little cuts on his fingers, but he has no teeth,,,what gives?

  • my dd has been doing this lately, especially today and super cranky...and has always been a big drooler. it seems early for teething but what else could it be?!

  • It's probably teething. It doesn't mean a tooth will pop out any time soon - some babies are early/slow teethers. DS started teething at 3 months and cut his first two teeth at once, at 6 months.
