Re: Calling all stylish mommies to be!

  • I'm not the most casual person you'll meet.  Even when traveling, I always look put together without sneakers, yoga pants, etc.  It's important for me to be stylish as well.  I don't mean "look like I stepped out of Vogue at all times," but certainly not to be messy, etc.  To me, to takes just as much work to put on a pair of nice jeans, a black sweater and cute flats as it does to put on sweats.  I'm not saying you shouldn't wear sweats at home (and of course, I understand there may be times when it can't be helped), but I will always try.  I don't judge others for what they wear, I just know what makes me feel good.

My mom is very stylish and I never saw her wearing sweats and such.  Or jeans actually.  I'm just trying to follow in her footsteps.

  • I refuse. I wear yoga pants and t-shirts at home, but I don't wear them out. I'm not nearly as concerned with style as I was pre-preg, as there are more important things to worry about. However, I'm finding it pretty easy to be comfy and cute throughout the day by shopping for cute and FITTED maternity clothes. I got some great jeans and dresses at H&M (they have a maternity section, but I also got some non-maternity) and some cute tops and leggings at Target. If you dont want to dress like a slob, do some shopping and get yourself together.

  • I've never been one to wear sweatpants even when just lounging around the house.  I wouldn't call myself super stylish but I always look put together and I always make sure I have at least a nice pair of jeans on and cute boots/sandals and some jewelry

  • Women turn to sweatpants when they are pregnant and postpartum b/c their other regular clothes don't fit.  The simple tip is buy maternity clothes.  It's tough because there is not a ton of selection so your wardrobe won't be as extensive.  I have decent maternity pants and tops that I wear to work and Gap Maternity jeans for at home.  Postpartum you most likely will end up wanting to wear sweat pants (Oh No the Horror!) b/c they are comfy, you are exhausted and recovering from a very big physical toll on your body.  But that doesn't need to last forever.  Just be aware that you may not fit into all of your old clothes for awhile (and some may never fit again).  I ended up buying a lot of new pants a size larger than I used to be.

One other tip- make it a priority to shower everyday when you are ML.  It makes you feel a lot better and more motivated to look nice and get out of the house. You may need to shower at night while DH is home to watch LO, do it whenever it is most convenient.

  • I can't say I'm not guilty for having a sweatpants and ponytail kinda day every once in a while, but for the most part I'm always put together/stylish when I have to go out in public. (And was this way pre-pregnancy...)

I refuse to be that sloppy person, especially when it doesn't take much effort at all to throw on some decent clothes. My advice would be to keep it simple - basics will do WONDERS for you, especially when you only have a few minutes to throw together an outfit! Basic tanks and tees are a staple in my closet...I can wear them with jeans, jeggings, skirts...etc...

Right now during my pregnancy jeggings and leggings have been my best friend :) I LOVE my jeggings - they're flattering and look good with every type of shirt I wear.

During nicer weather, maxi dresses and maxi skirts were a huge part of my wardrobe - comfy and easy to throw on, but looks cute. When it started getting a little cooler I threw a cardigan or cute jacket on top.

Cardigans are great to have too because you can layer with them, so when you have one of those pregnancy hot flash moments, you can strip it off.

For cooler months, nice sweaters are great. I haven't had to break my sweaters out yet, but I went ahead and stocked up on a few new, roomier ones from F21 and H&M (by roomier, I just sized up because they're already shaped more on the baggier side, and I figured they might shrink a little). They're not too thick so I will be layering them.

I don't know if you go out at all, but invest in a few stylish, simple dresses that flatter your body (such as a LBD) - whenever you have some last minute plans for dinner or a night out, you can throw it on and accessorize, and you're ready to go :)  Since becoming pregnant, I've bought 3 dresses...and ended up using them A LOT (seems like there's always a last minute bday dinner or a baptism I've had to go to so far!)...I found 2 styles that worked with my pregnant body and bought them both (and went back to get a 3rd in a different color).

As for quick hair - DRY SHAMPOO! It does wonders for when you absolutely have no time to wash your hair and are tempted to put it in a ponytail LOL. It also is a styling agent if your hair is being difficult or is really flat. I love Pssst! brand (smells like shampoo).
Invest in some hair accessories - head bands, clips, bobby pins. I often pin back a little section of my bangs when I need a quick, put-together 'do. I bought some cute hair accesories (flower bobby pins and clips) so when I do have to put my hair up last minute (usually in a sloppy bun), I can at least clip a flower in it to make it look like I meant for it to be a sloppy bun ;)

Something I read in a pregnancy magazine...is to simplify your makeup routine (if you have one)...I started doing that already so I know exactly what steps I need to do to put on a decent face, and can get it done in a certain amount of minutes. I figured I should practice now so I'll be ready to get my butt in gear when LO comes ;)

I know this sounds like a lot of money, but I'm a huge bargain shopper so I always looks for sales. I shop mostly at F21, H&M, and Target, and I'm a huuuuge ebayer! You can get a lot of nice, gently used maternity clothes for cheap from ebay! (ALL my work pants came from ebay!) .....

So....this is a lot of advice to take in Embarrassed Sorry about that! I hope it helps a little though! Feel free to ask more questions...I love talking about fashion!!!! Wink  I can only hope that when I transition into mommyhood, I'll be able to keep up with my own advice LOL!

  • When I look put together, I feel together - I'm much more productive!  Even in law school, on exam days, when many others were in unwashed sweats, I needed to take a shower and put on some concealer and mascara or else I was going to have a terrible test experience.  I just feel more capable and confident when I'm dressed in "real clothes."

I have a "uniform" of sorts that pretty much works during pre-, during, and post-pregnancy.  Skinny jeans (my favorite are actually from GAP and I love their demi panel maternity always skinny jeans), a silk tunic, and flats or riding boots.  I feel comfortable, I know the combo looks good on my body type, and it's easy w/o being messy or unkempt.

  • I don't know what your definition of stylish is, but I used to hang out with a group of "stylish" moms.  (We moved, so I don't see them anymore.)  They always have make up on, have some sort of jewelry on, carry premium brand diaper bags AND premium brand purses to put their own stuff.  Shoes? Of course.  They may sound like b!tches on tv shows, but they were actually very nice girls.  Compared to them, I don't consider myself stylish, but peer pressure worked, and I didn't become sloppy.  I don't wear premium brand stuff head to toe.  My college sweatshirts (they have to fit perfectly, though) are a very important part of my casual days to look cute, like when I take my son to the open gym and jump up and down together:)

  • Ok.... what is all the hate regarding yoga pants? It really just depends on what you do besides the pants...If you have a baggy t-shirt and beat up sneakers with a limp pony tail.... ok, I get it. Sweat pants? Never, no way in hell, but a nice pair of yoga pants in good condition paired with a cute top and accessories? Don't be hating... It looks and feels good. Plus it is the longest lasting maternity wear that I've been able to find...

I visited DH at work yesterday and wore black yoga pants, cute pink/gray running shoes and a purple Nike jacket. All in good condition, nothing hanging lose or too tight. Apparently I "still look hot" 6 months pregnant. So, yes for the yoga pants, no for the "sloppy mom" look....

    Meh....

  • So far I have done pretty good not 'letting myself go'

I may wear a pony tail or clip around the house, but rarely out of the house..I always do my makeup too. Even though I have gained a lot of weight..mostly belly..i still want to look nice and shapely, and do not succumb to those big 'tent' tops.

I do wear my Victorias Secret type yoga outfits..but make it cute..with a cute bag, accessories, and flats..NEVER sneakers, unless I am at the gym. I just got my hair trimmed and colored today too..and it is still long below the bra..I am not about to get a 'mommy' short hair do for convenience.

When baby is born I am sure I will attempt to keep this up.  I also am not productive when I feel and look frumpy or lazy.  If I do feel too lazy to dress cute, I will still always wear light makeup and do my hair.

So ask me a few months after February... I hope I stay stylish!

  • I grew up with a mother that emphasized looking presentable when you leave the house. Sometimes that means being in pajamas all day long with no makeup on, but if you have somewhere to go...you put yourself together!

I rarely wear ponytails, and I ALWAYS wear makeup. I feel better when I know that I look pretty. As for sweats..I hate sweats. I'm just as comfortable in jeans, if not moreso.

My go-to maternity outfit right now is ON skinny jeans and a cute maternity top, with boots or flats.

  • My hair is too short to wear in a ponytail and I usually have my naturally wavy hair done with gel.  That means that I have to wash it every day so that forces me to look presentable.  I never leave the house without makeup but I don't really wear a lot of it.  I find that you also need to find yourself a cute coat.  Living in Buffalo, it is cold a good portion of the year.  I just bought a purple and gray plaid wool coat from A Pea in the Pod.  It's maternity, but I will get so much use out of it that it is definitely worth it!

This exactly!!  I have lots of yoga pants and nicer t-shirts or jogging suit type outfits that I wore around the house while I was on maternity leave. I always tried to look put together when I left the house. I have noticed that with a LO at home I have changed my hair style to be quicker to do in the mornings and that my makeup routine is very efficient. I try to set a good example for DD but we will see how I do with two LOs at home.

  • I think I pretty much look put together whenever I leave the house. At home is another story -- I may not always put the extra effort because I'm cleaning, cooking, running around after DS and sitting on the floor with him. I might tie my hair up in a scarf when at home and not comb my hair for the day if I don't go out. And I don't wear jeans at home so sweats it is.

Again, when I leave my house is a different story. There is no reason why I would wear sweatpants outside (it's not something I do) -- or reason for me not to come my hair or put a little foundation (I don't always wear makeup on the weekend -- but I'm not comfortable with my complexion, so I try to at least put foundation).

The only tip I have is to stay true to yourself and who you are. There is no reason to change your style just because LO arrives. Maybe flats instead of heals or a pair of sneakers -- but sweats and a messy ponytail is over kill to me... LOL.

  • At home I live in sweatpants and something comfortable on top, hoodie or t-shirt. When I leave the house I put on "real clothes" but I've never cared about keeping up with styles (I absolutely hate skinny jeans... takes me back to elementary school when they were "in" and my mom put me in them. My feet are too big for skinny jeans and I'd rather feel like my legs aren't being packaged into sausage casing).

Never worn makeup besides prom. In the summer I live in sandals, winter is Vans. I never learned how to "do" my hair besides in a ponytail but I'm not concerned with it. I'm pretty sure a lot of the PPs would look at me and consider me "sloppy" or "slovenly" but I'm comfortable not squeezing into the latest trends.

    So there :P lol

  • love all these tips!! thanks mommies.  on the diaper bag quest... i've found most regular purses work just fine for most outings as long as they are roomy :)  my fav diaper bag brand is Timi & Leslie... i've only found them online, they are pricey but so so fab.
