Giada- pronunciation?

Is it a long "a" or short "a"? DD was playing with a little girl on the playground yesterday and for the life of me, I can't remember if her mom introduced her as Jah-duh or Jay-duh. We made a play date and I don't want to get it wrong when I see them again (although I'm not afraid to just ask if there's no consensus here).

Re: Giada- pronunciation?

  • I read it Jay-Duh. And don't care for it much.

  • Proper pronunciation is Jah-duh.

  • I'm pretty sure it's a short "a"-- I say it like Jyah-duh. I'm just going based on Giada de Laurentiis or however her name is spelled (the chef on TV)

  • Jiah-duh or G-ah-duh are both acceptable pronounciations.

I agree. I would pronounce it Jee-ah-da. But I could be totally wrong. That's just how I thought it was pronounced.

Is that how de Laurentis pronounces it? It seems really weird to draw out the "i" given the Italian pronunciation of words like "giorno" (jorno) and Giulia (Julia). But if that's the standard Americanized pronunciation, then so be it.

In English Giada and my name, Gianna, have three syllables. They're acceptable pronounciations in the US but in Italy you'd only hear Jiah-dah and Jiah-nuh.

Oh. Hmm. I thought she pronounced it the other way. I've only ever heard it with her name.

Agree.  My cousin has a daughter named Giana and they pronounce it "gee - awn - uh".  (They call her Gia for short!)
