3rd Trimester

To induce or not to induce?

Had our 39 wk appt yesterday and I am 50% effaced and a little more than 3cm dialted.  OB mentioned she could induce on Friday.  (OB is on call Friday and woudl deliver) We went ahead and scheduled it but now I'm having 2nd thoughts!  It woudl be nice to have it Firday becuase then we could plan care arrangements for DD.  And my mom is off all next week so she could help out.  But now that I've 'Googled' the risks I'm scared.

(With DD I didn't have a choice/didn't have a chance to research pros/cons since my water broke and I still didn't have conractions 36 hours later!)

Re: To induce or not to induce?

  • I was induced and it turned out fine.  There are so many stories on either side though.  Sometimes they go well, sometimes not.

  • i personally wouldn't induce unless medically necessary. why risk it not going well for no real reason?

  • Every person that I know that has been induced has been just fine.  Just my personal experience.  No c-sections or drama stories either.  They all had their babies by dinner time.

  • I would not induce unless my doctor told me that it was medically necessary. The practice I am using does not even consider induction until 42 weeks.

Its completely up to you, your H & your doctor how you choose to proceed. People may have all kinds of opinions, but we don't know your medical history or any other details that would make it a good idea to tell you to do it one way or the other.

I wish you a smooth, safe delivery whichever route you decide to take.

    All the best.

  • I waited it out I am 40 weeks and 2 days and they are forcing me to induce on the 24th. I don't want to but have no choice because insurance reasons. I have read some good stories and some bad but I have read half of all inductions lead to c-section. I have tried everything to induce naturally (except cod liver oil) and nothing has worked. I would say if you can wait it out since this is your 2nd you probably won't have to wait as long as me.

  • i was induced for medical reasons and had a 28 hour labor...and it IS a scientific fact that one intervention leads to more interventions.

  • I'm just lurking.  Since you've already had a baby (and I assume given birth vaginally), your chances of the induction working are incredibly high, particularly with your favorable cervix.  It will probably be okay.  I had a miserable induction and it ended with a c-section, but I was a FTM and my cervix was basically the opposite of yours -- completely not ready.

  • This is really not something that anyone can decide for you :) You have to do what you think is best for you and baby.  I was induced w/ all of my kids so far b/c they were late all went great and it helped b/c I was already dialted.  This baby will be a medical induction or c-section so hopefully no 41 weeks.

So just do what works best for you and baby and don't worry what others think or say.

  • I'm scheduled for a medically necessary induction next Tuesday and I'm not crazy about it, but it's what's best for my little girl. I wouldn't induce if there was no real reason to.

  • If I were given the choice, that late in the game with that much progress going on, I would take it, simply due to the fact that I have 2 kiddos at home, family is not close by and it would just make lots of things less complicated logistically.  And I had a great induction experience with DS1.

This exactly and my DD was 10 days late, aspirated meconium (which most likely was because she was overdue) and inhaled it. Ended up in the NICU for 10 days. I will not be going that overdue this time because of it!

Ditto- unless 100% medically necessary "most" labors are more succesful and go better when they happen naturally. I know there are plenty of induction story successes but i think there are WAY more induction failures. Mother nature has a plan and our babies know when they should be born much better than the medical community.

  • I'd get induced. My water broke with DS and I ended up being induced with him at 37 weeks and he was fine. It's your decision ultimately and you have to go with your gut. GL!

  • One thing I would suggest is to calculate your bishop score, or ask your doctor about it. That will give you a better idea of induction will work for you.

  • I was induced with my first one due to being in a car accident and her needing to get out. There were some complications but nothing that i think had to do with the induction itself. If i could go back and do it again (and there was no medical reasoning for it), i would not have been induced. I think it would have been smoother in terms of pain and length if it would have gone on by itself.

  •    I would stop googleng it, and talk to your OB about inductions she has had.  I am getting induced this Friday, and was terrified even though I had one birth already Vaginally, he was a preemie so it was maybe 30 mins of labor. I really feel almost like a FTM going in, but I talked to my Dr and she explained everything, Including what happens if it fails, if the baby has issues, if it all goes perfect.

Mine is part medical, my placenta is showing signs of breaking down due ti diabetes, but I also chose Friday so I know my mom would be able to be here to watch my son, because it means a lot to have my fiance in the room with me, and I know my son would be scared and freaked out if we kept him in the room with us.

    This.

I was induced at 40 weeks, 3 days. We had a Single Umbilical Artery (SUA), so they wanted me delivered by 41 weeks (so technically, there was medical reason to induce). Was completely unfavorable for an induction, and everything turned out just fine.  I have to admit...it was nice to have the convenience of knowing the day and the time for planning reasons.  There is always a risk with an induction, but there are no guarantees everything will be puppies and unicorns even if you go into labor on your own.

  • I was induced with DD and ended up with a bad labor and c/s, but I wasn't favorable for induction at all.  The chances of success would be higher if you're already dilated.  Still, if it's an induction for non-medical reasons, I think I'd want the baby to come on its own unless it was something like I just couldn't get child care for DD at any other time.

    ::lurking::

    All of this....

I would not get an medicine (pitocin) induction unless necessary under the guidelines that are suggested by the ACOG... which is medically necessary or 42+ weeks... If you want to get things jump started to avoid an induction, I would suggest using evening primrose oil vaginally and orally (ask dr first), getting your membranes stripped, a foley catheter before pit (this will increase the chances of pit working), and depending on your hospitals timeline policy---water breakage if they give you more than 24 hours before the rush you to a c/s (my BC would give me 4 days granted I was monitored for infection)...

ETA: I was 41 weeks 4 days and DS was just fine... no meconium or anything else :) so just because he was a little over baked doesn't mean there was going to be baby poop, but it is a higher possibility the longer you go--however, I think I was more willing to risk meconium than an induction, just my personal opinion...
