Babies: 0 - 3 Months

My baby poops ALL the time!

DS is EBF and 3.5 weeks old. I probably change 12-15 poopy diapers per day. It's freaking crazy! I don't mind changing the dipes, but what's frustrating is that it really interferes with his napping and sleeping. Every time he awakes he goes through a tooting and pooping process. I'm pretty sure the urge to poop is waking him up. It's just constant! And it never fails to interrupt the soothe-to-sleep process. And he eats so much! I can never cradle hold him without him rooting. Ive always heard that breastfed babies can't overeat, but I can't help but wonder with this little man. And Ive been trying to get him to take a paci, thinking he just wants to soothe, but he won't take it. I thought maybe I have a foremilk/hindmilk embalance, so I switched to just feeding on one side at a time. I've seen a difference in the poop color (watery green to yellow) but there is still a few watery green stools and the eating and pooping hasn't slowed down. He weighed 7.25 pounds at birth and at 2.5 weeks he was already 9. Can't imagine what he weighs now. IDK. I'm thinking about contacting my LC. Just seems like something is wrong. I've been feeding him every two hours. There is only one stretch at night that he'll go 3-3.5 hours befor eating again. And it's not a three week growth spurt because it's been going on for quite some time.

  • BTW- I realize it is normal for newborns to eat every two hours, but seriously...this many poopy diapers?

  • Give it time.  My little guy was like that, then all of a sudden things slowed way down.  Now he's lucky if he poops once per 24 hrs and he's formula fed.  I've read that BF babies can go days with out pooping.  Give it a few more weeks, i'm sure you'll notice a difference.  GL!

  • It sounds like you are doing a great job !
  • LO poops all the time too.

    DD 9/4/11
    EDD 9/1/15
  • Thank you for asking this question. I was afraid my LO was the abnormally gifted in her ability to have BMs. Some kind of crazy gift from her Daddy :)

  • My DD is the same way! I nearly get her to sleep and I hear the explosion in her diaper. I feel like it is a never ending cycle!

  • DS was pooping after every feeding up until about 8 weeks, then it slowed to about 2 explosively large poops after the first two feedings and then nothing the rest of the day. This week, its been almost 48 hours and he still hasnt pooped. I think their digestive system matures and it slows down but it can take some time.

  • Almost every diaper of DD's is poop.  I've stopped changing her before a feeding because she always poops when she eats too.

At over 2 years old, DS still poops multiple times a day as well.  I almost never get just a wet diaper from either of them!

My pedi told me this morning that in the first few weeks, EBF babies will poo a lot and then it will just change. She said that BM has a laxative quality about it those first few weeks to clean out the baby's system from being in utero.  I was concerned b/c my guy went from many poo dipes to one every other day and she said that was due to the laxative effect no longer happening.

  • My daughter did this too.  A couple weeks ago she started just having a couple poopy diapers a day vs every or every other.  I breastfeed too and I have heard that will make them poop more.

  • DD was like that too. Only this past week have I seen a change. Nothing I did though, I guess she is just outgrowing the constant pooping.

  • DD was just like this until 8 weeks, now we have 1 explosive poop every 2-3 days.  I almost miss the smaller frequent ones - I ended up having to wash her carseat last week after an episode!
