So, DD has been in daycare for almost 6 months. The past few times we went to pick her up, the teacher told us she was very hungry and angry because of it and she needs lunch (solids).
I just started DD on solids 2 weeks ago, she is 5.5 months. I am not ready to give her solids 2 times a day before 6 months. What I have said was if she is hungry give her bottles. We feed on demand. We also provided ready to feed formula in case she doesn't have enough. I have also pointed this out. I know there are some babies who are fed on very strict schedules in her room, so again I said please feed her when hungry.
They said they feed her sometimes 2.5 hours sometimes 3. But every single sheet has EXACTLY 3 hour increments between feedings. Also, the teacher mentioned that other babies were eating lunch so she has too. UGH
FEED HER ON DEMAND, and give her more if necessary. Today I packed on bigger bottle by an oz then she normally gets. I just don't understand why if she is so angry and hungry they aren't using the ready to feed stuff. Solids at this age are not the answer.
The other thing is that her "write up" talks about how happy she was. GRRR
Sorry this is long and a vent, but at this point I don't know what to do other than complain to the director.
Re: Daycare dilemna
I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I would be really frustrated, too.
Just to give you some perspective, we started my DS on solids about two weeks ago, also, and have been giving him solids twice a day for about a week. He has done extremely well with it.
I actually was NOT ready to start solids at all before six months but I started having supply issues two weeks ago and while I was fighting that and doing everything I could to get my supply up, the ped's office recommended I start some higher calories solids (avocado mixed with BM) in the meantime. So we did and DS loved it and then my supply came back up so now we're feeding him as much BM as he'll take, then following up with a little bit of solids in the am and a little bit in the pm.
Regardless, if your daycare's policy is to adhere to the baby's schedule, they should absolutely be feeding on demand. However, some daycares have a strict schedule they go by and are less likely to feed on demand. What is your daycare's stated policy? I know both of the ones I have looked at in our area explicitly say that they follow baby's schedule.
Our DC is supposed to follow baby not a schedule. I know she loves solids, but I really wanted to wait until 6 months. That said, I know she was really ready a couple of months ago so I went for it.
I guess I am just super pissed that if she is hungry, and there is a supply of formula that they are not feeding her.
DH went in this morning with firm instructions.
That would piss me off too that someone is making my baby go hungry for no reason. I would speak with the director if the teacher insists on not following your instructions.
I can't believe they would tell you what she needs... that's ridiculous. You are the parent and you decide what she needs. If you said bottles and feed on demand, they should be doing it without question.
I work in an infant room at a daycare. IMO they shouldn't be telling you anything about schedules. They should follow your babies needs and what you have told them. That's what we do. Where I work, they don't do things on schedule until they move up to the 1 year old room.
