XP: Family friendly church recommendations?

I want our family to start going to church again on a regular basis.  The specific religion isn't important to me, as long as it's Christian.  More important is finding a place with a pastor I like, sermons that move me, and a young-ish, active congregation.  It has to be family friendly -- we have 2 small kids who we want to be able to particiapte.  I don't want a place that the "family-friendliness" is sending the kids to the nursery to play.  Ideally, I'd like there to be a specific children's service... where the kids are involved for part, and then maybe go off to do some sort of activity related to the topic of the day.  We are in the Burke/Annandale/N Springfield area, and would ideally like somewhere close by.

Any suggestions?

  • We go to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Springfield (corner of Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill) and love it.  We always go to the Saturday evening service which starts at 5:30 because it's laid back and family friendly.  There are always a lot of kids at the service.

My son will wiggle out of the pew and then run down the aisle and it's not that big of a deal...

  • I'm in North Springfield! We go to St. Barnabas Episcopal on Ravensworth Road. It's a very diverse but small church community with folks of all ages. It's super kid-friendly, too. I would recommend the 10:15 service since it's the one with music.

  • We're in North Springfield and we go to St. Bernadette's on Old Keene Mill and really like it.  If you're Catholic, it's really a progressive parish.  As to non-Catholic Churches, I have no experience of them but the Baptist Church at the corner of Braddock and Ravensworth seems to have a lot of young families.  We stop by their playground every once in a while and everyone seems really nice.  Immanuel Bible Church at Braddock and Backlick is a mega church, I have no idea if that is your thing, but I've known folks over the years who go there and love it.  They do run a local MOMs club as well.
  • We go to Fairfax Community Church on Braddock Road, and while we don't have kids, it appears that they have a really great childrens program.  There is a separate children's service that, from what I've heard, sounds like it is really good.  I would encourage you to check it out!
