Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What is the best way to stop breastfeeding?

My daughter will be 1 on Friday. I have been trying to get her to stop breastfeeding for about a month, she will not. She does not like whole milk or other infant milks. She refuses to drink them. I have been giving her a sippy cup but she will not even drink breastmilk from it. I have even tried giving her half whole milk and half breastmilk. I want to be able to sleep at night. she still wakes up all night to nurse. Please help. What are some of the ways that helped with your babies?

  • You might try posting this on the 12-24 month board and breast feeding board as well. Also you might look into kellymom.com, not sure if they have a section on weaning, but they have ton of helpful women.

I personally have no advice, but best of luck to you.

  • With DD, we added a little bit of strawberry syrup to her milk.  BM is sweeter than cow's milk and the change throws them.  H is a pedi and he recommends this to his patients.  Give it time,  I promise LO won't go to kindergarten with the boob.

  • I think the first thing you need to work on is night weaning.  Ferbe's book has a great section on it.  Once I did Ferber at 9 months, my daughter started STTN and that made nursing much more bareable.  Once you get her night weaned then you can move onto dropping sessions during the day.

Pick which one she is least attached to, and when she wants to nurse distract her with a snack/sippy/whatever.  Once she goes at least 3-5 days without nursing for that session, move onto another.  So on and so on until she is totally weaned.

It's a gradual process and will/should take at least a month if not longer.  Going cold turkey is cruel and a horrible first birthday gift.  Can you imagine- Happy Birthday!  Now you no longer get to have the one thing in the world that you love the most, and brings you comfort!  YAY!!!

BTW, my daughter will rarely drink whole milk/any milk that is not directly from my breast.  It's not a big deal.  She just drinks water and eats regular foods that are calcium rich.

  • I know a few women who have had success distracting their LO with a snack and activity for one feeding per day and cutting back in that manner over a few weeks gradually dropping one nursing session at a time.

  • I agree with PP's- drop the night sessions first. Once we started CIO during the night, she started STTN. Next- we dropped feedings that were in the evening first, from there DD kind of weened herself.

     .....strawberry syrup?

  • Are you co-sleeping so that she nurses in the night whenever she wants? If so I would say to try to transition to her own crib so that the boob isnt right there whenever she wants it, If not and she is already in her crib I would say just stop offering it to her. Im not sure if you pumped at all, but if you did/do then you should just offer pumped milk in a bottle or sippy to replace a nursing sessions every few days until no longer nursing. We just recently weaned but I was EP the last 3 months so it was an easy transition. Good Luck.

  • Like what you use to make pink milk, Nestle.  Just enough to make the milk a little sweeter.  I guess that doesn't help her wean, just to help LO transition from BM to cow's milk.
