daycare- WWYD?

question for you all.  We just found out that the daycare we had wanted will probably be able to accomodate us- which is great news overall.  However, they recently expanded and have been approved to provide care for 38 infants- 28 in one room, 10 in the other.  They have a 1-3 ratio for staff, it just strikes me as being a lot of babies.  like, A LOT.  thoughts??

  • That's a lot of babies!  The ratio of infant to teacher doesn't bother me but 28 babies in ONE room?  That screams chaos.

  • 28 in one room does sound like a lot but the ratio seems about right.

  • That does seem like A LOT!  I am shocked that it meets licensing regulations.  I don't know what the limit is here, but I do know there is a max number of children per room in addition to the child to staff ratio.

  • Can you put in a request to have your LO in the 10-infant room maybe?
  • That seems like a lot.  The most I've ever heard of in a room until preschool age is 10.

  • Wow!  That is a lot.  I'd be concerned about the noise and chaos level.  What kind of room are they using that can accommodate 28 cribs??

  • That does seem like ALOT, I would ask a bunch of questions about it, how do they keep that many babies calm in one room, how are they seperated, how do they keep personal belongings seperate, how do they keep the room sanitary (with THAT many diapers and bottles being made, this makes me nervous) As long as you are okay with how things are ran, maybe even come observe for a few days, it should be okay as long as they have policies and procedures that are ACTUALLY being followed that ensure your LO's safety!

  • I am an ECE in New Brunswick Canada.  We have the same ratio 1:3, but we have a max group size of 9.  28 seems insane.  i work with 2 year olds and the max group ( 10) is sometimes too much to handle even when we are in ratio.  Kids feed off each other.  Also, if there are so many adults in the room, is your child going to have a  ( or a few) primary caregivers with whom he can really bond?

  • Thanks for your input.  It is a HUGE room, I've seen it, but they just got licensed to open it so I haven't seen it "in action".  We're going to put a deposit down, but keep looking (the other place I'm not thrilled with and they had a SIDS death a few weeks ago) and there is a new place opening in a few weeks nearby that we will be checking out.  But we'll reserve a space with a refundable deposit so we have the option .

  • Maybe they'll have the infants separated by age. They'll probably have the mobile infants separate from the ones who don't move around yet.

  • Doesn't quite sound right to me.  I have taught pre-k for several years.  No matter how much staff you have once you add that many kids it is going to be crazy.

  • that many infants in one room is definitely all the birth control i would need.

  • Wow! That is a LOT of kids. My son's daycare has 3-4 toddlers in his room depending on the day. Now, they will take up to 6, but that is it. They phased out the infant room when these kids aged up to one, so when they were infants the max was 3. He started at 10.5 months and hardly naps at daycare with the 3 kids. I can't imagine having that many!
