Classic and new children's books? (for shower theme)

Hi ladies! DC Nestie here, still working toward being a Bumpie. Smile

I'm working a "children's books" theme for my SIL's shower and would love to hear your favorites, classic or new. I left teaching 10 years ago so I'm woefully out of touch with the children's lit scene.

I'll be weaving them into games and possibly food ideas, but if you have any other suggestions on how to incorporate the theme into the party activities, please share! Thanks!

  • We have mostly the old standbys...

    Where the Wild Things Are

    Anything by Sandra Boynton

    Good Night Moon

    Anything by Eric Carle

    Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

I can see all sorts of theme ideas here - the primary colors of Carle's books, a bedtime story theme (everyone brings a bed time book),

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

  • Counting Birds is DD's new favorite. Other favorites in our house- anything by Eric Carle, the Monster at the End of This Book, or any Sandra Boynton. The boards books are always the best for when they are younger. My mom has gotten DD a series of board books about artists' from the National Gallery of Art and she loves all of those too. I give them to my arty friends as gifts too Big Smile

  • On the baby side of things, my kids loved the classics: Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Gorilla, anything Sandra Boynton, also Eric Carlyle with the Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear, Brown Bear.
  • Knuffle Bunny is a good one to add.  I'm envisioning a party game where people have to dig through a pile of laundry to find the missing bunny.  That could be hilarious.

One of the Boynton books is Hippos Go Berserk and there's a big raging party in the middle.  It might not be the greatest for people who don't know the story, but if I was more creative I could probably use it as a way to combine lots of kids' stories together leading up to the big shower/party.

  • One book my kids absolutely love is "Mouse Mess" (https://www.amazon.com/Mouse-Mess-Linnea-Asplind-Riley/dp/0590100483/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313623570&sr=8-1).  It's all about a mouse raiding a kitchen at night, so you could incorporate it into the menu pretty easily.  However, not enough people may be familiar with it for it to make sense.

"The Little Engine That Could" - no idea what this could be used for, but it's a classic.

Anything by Olivier Dunrea in the Peedie/Ollie/Gossie/Gertie/etc. series is also a favorite.  I thought they were kind of obscure, but a lot more people know about them than I realized.  Games like "find Peedie's red hat" or something involving not breaking an egg?

The "Madeline" series - French finger foods?  A game of translating French words for baby items into English?

"Green Eggs & Ham" - mini-quiches (like in a muffin tin) that have food coloring (if that wouldn't look too unappetizing)

"The Giving Tree" - foods involving apples

"If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" - self-explanatory  Smile

  • My personal favorite is "On the Night You Were Born." It's a tearjerker for mothers everywhere!

Others that are popular in our house:

    1. Is Your Mama a Llama?
    2. Sheep in a Jeep
    3. Good Night Moon
    4. Harry the Dirty Dog
    5. The Going to Bed Book (Sandra Boynton)
    6. Brown Bear, Brown Bear

  • You could buy a set of Little Golden Books, and use them as table decorations...
  • Our favorites thus far are Sandra Boyton books (especially, Moo Baa LaLaLa, One Two Three and a one about hippo belly buttons that I forget the title of).

I've seen lots of Hungry Caterpillar birthday decor lately.  You could do a cupcake "cake" with each being a link on the caterpillar.

  • These are such cute ideas! I'm in love with the idea of an Eric Carle themed party.

I was seriously considering a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme for our nursery, but the jungle won out.

    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • I don't see any mention of the Runaway Bunny.  My favorite!  That and the Story of Ferdinand.
