Any HR/insurance people?

I am wondering about scheduling a doctors visit. I am currently out on STD because I broke my ankle in September. I am hoping to be able to start flying again this week or next. I will need to use STD again later next year when I have to stop flying for the pregnancy at 7 months. Is there any reason to wait to call for a doctors appointment until after I am off STD this time? I just don't want to risk being denied next year for some reason. I don't see how pregnancy and a broken ankle have anything to with one another, but since I know other people have been denied for prior health conditions, I was just wondering. Thanks!

  • I don't think I understand your question.  You need to see a Dr, for either your ankle or pregnancy.  You are on STD for the ankle, and believe you will use your STD coverage again for pregnancy.  I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't go to the Dr now.

  • Sorry, I wasn't clear. I have been going to the doctor for my ankle since it happened and am on STD/FMLA leave for now. I am concerned that becoming pregnant and starting prenatal visits while on STD could possibly make me ineligible for STD next year when I have to stop flying. I was wondering if I should wait to call and make my first OB appt until after I have returned to work next week? But after thinking about it, it probably doesn't matter since the pregnancy definitely began while on STD anyway. The STD company will know one way or another if they want to try and deny me coverage next year.

  • If you are enrolled in the STD plan at the time you become pregnant, then I can't think of a reason for your benefits to be denied.  Regardless of any other condition you are currently using your benefits for.

One issue that does come to mind, is FMLA.  If you are out on FMLA right now for your ankle, and become pregnant, you still only have 12 weeks in a 12 month period to take FMLA.  So the FMLA time you have now affects how much FMLA time you will have in 9 months.  IF FMLA is an issue for you...

  • Thanks Jan! Our FMLA starts over in January so it won't be an issue.

I would double check this - that is VERY unusual.  While the employer *could* use a calendar year for FMLA, it's not a widely used nor recommended practice.  Most employers use a rolling calendar for FMLA.  If they are using the calendar, you are lucky.  Just doublecheck!!!!
