Breastfeeding

does anyone have a ebf baby that take a pacifier?

I have heard that a pacifier can cause some nipple confusion...anyone have some experience with this? I have a week old baby, and he likes to suck even when he is not hungry.  Wondering if a pacifier would be bad for breastfeeding.

thanks!

  • DS takes a pacifier and still nurses like crazy. He also had no problem with a bottle. Our joke is that he's happy as long as something is in his mouth. If he's latching good and eating good, I don't see a problem trying it

  • My LO had a pacifier before she had a bottle or the breast.  She will take all three.  She doesn't care much about the pacifier; she will only take it when I'm getting her bottles or the boob ready for her to eat.  I guess she doesn't have the sucking for comfort like some babies do.  But to answer your question mine hasn't been confused going between all three, though I do use a nipple shield which may make a difference.

  • Personally, I think true nipple confusion is really rare. Just be sure to use an "anatomically correct" pacifier like a Soothie. Nora took a pacifier when she was little and it was no big deal for us.

  • Yep, we use Soothies and Avent bottles and have no issues going from any one of them to the others.
  • DD is 2 weeks old and has been using the paci since we came home from the hospital.  the LC there checked her latch before we left and said since she's got the hang of BFing, a paci won't hurt. they recommended that we use it for comfort since she has such a strong sucking reflex.

  • We introduced the soothie pacifier from the hospital after two weeks of breastfeeding.  She is starting to lose interest now, but I'm okay with that.

  • DS had the Soothie and a bottle in the NICU before he even touched a boob, and I can assure you the boy is not confused at all. He takes a bottle from the DCP like a champ, but rarely takes a Soothie because he prefers the real thing. If he's sucking on something and milk isn't coming out, he's not going to continue to suck.

  • We started using a pacifier the second day in the hospital, and DD has never had nipple confusion.  We've used Nuk and Soothie brands.

  • When I was in the hospital, the LCs highly discouraged introducing a pacifier due to nipple confusion. When LO went to the nursery the first night, the nurses gave him a pacifier (I hadn't thought to specify that I didn't want him to have one). Honestly it's worked out just fine for us. We use the soothie from the hospital and it really seems to calm DS when he needs it. He never seemed to show any signs of nipple confusion so I think the LCs tend to be overly cautious about that kind of thing.

  • We started giving baby a paci in the hospital.  We tried to restrict it but LO needed to comfort suck and we gave up.  He doesn't have any nipple confusion and breastfeeding is going smoothly.

I would be prepared though to end up with other paci issues.  Our LO uses the paci but is not "addicted" to it.  He will refuse it or spit it out when he's done.  If your LO ends up liking it, you could end up having to put the paci back in every time he spits it out.  The risk is worth it though, IMHO.  GL!

  • We gave a paci on day 2 in the hospital.  However, my LC / pediatrician told me that nipple confusion is not the main problem associated with the paci - it is that when sucking, the babies release a chemical that tells their brain that they're full, when in fact they are not.  I was told that babies with weight issues or moms who have supply problems, should not use pacis initially.
