what do you do with halloween candy... after

I read an article somewhere in a magazine about something this mom did with the Halloween candy after halloween or by Thanksgiving. I have searched the magazines I have here and can not find it. Of course I also can not remember what it was she did but it was a cute idea. Anyone have some great ideas on what they do? I already have seen a bunch of ideas but not what I was looking for. Would love to hear your ideas on how you limit the candy and what you do with it!

  • I will have the boys pick two or three treats to keep the night of Halloween and then we set them out. In the morning, the candy will be replaced with books or a small toy. The candy will be shipped off to work with DH.

  • I have a friend who collects it and sends it to the food bank. I love the idea and think we might do that next year. This yr though he is only doing 5-10 houses so I think we will help him eat it.
  • Most dentist offices will buy it from you. Our dentist will send it over seas to the troops.

This is what we plan on doing when they collect enough to matter.  Last year was our first one and we only did 4-5 houses before the boys were over it and ready to come home.  This year I expect Andrew to be more excited and want to do more but luckily our neighborhood is kind of blah about halloween so it's only every few houses that are handing out anyway.

I love this idea---if I don't get my act together and do the gift replacement it will for sure be getting shipped off to someone's workplace. ;)

  • I pick out a few pieces I think is ok for the kids.

  • G and I usually finish it on our own, but we don't buy much since we don't get trick-or-treaters. I need my daily chocolate fix and those fun size chocolates are perfect!

  • Depends on what kind of candy.

Reese's (cups or pieces) go nicely in a cheesecake. Candy keeps for a while, so you could save it and use it later.

Or, as a treat -- maybe your LO gets an A or a really great report card -- you could have an ice cream party (even if it's just siblings) and use the candy as toppings. Love positive reinforcement.  I wouldn't use food as a reward every time, but once in a while seems ok imo.

  • I was starting to feel like the worst mom ever by letting my kid have his candy!  I mean - it's sort of the point. ;)  (Not to be judgmental or anything - just my opinion).  Ryan will also get to have a few pieces a day.  DH and I will share it. <:)  Some will go to DH's work and I take a BUNCH to mops!

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • Leftover candy that we bought for trick or treaters goes to DH's work. Candy that M received while trick or treating he gets to keep and eat a piece or two/day until it's gone.

  • Halloween candy was definitely a problem for us last year.  J loved the trick-or-treating/collecting part and I don't want to limit it b/c that's part of the Halloween fun!  But then we were left w/so way more candy than we wanted him to eat.  DH and I went back and forth on what to do about it but I really like the ideas from this article:

I think we'll put some of these into place this holiday season!

  • I let them eat it :) Not all at once and they need to share with us. But they can eat it I am not too concerned.

We just keep it and let him have a few pieces a night if he's eaten dinner. I don't think there is anything wrong with candy if you teach that it needs to be eaten in moderation. I think Halloween and Easter are two great times to teach kids how to eat candy.

Teaching them by taking all the good stuff for me and leaving them with the coconut crap!
