1st Trimester

Questions!! Am I 8 weeks?!

I found out I am pregnant 3 days ago and am trying to figure out how far along I am. I have a doc appt. on Nov. 1 but 2 weeks seems so far away, haha.

Okay, according to my LMP I would be 8 weeks, but I have very irregular periods (usually only have a period every other month). I took a pregnancy test late September because I hadn't had a period yet (not unusual) and my husband and I were not as careful as we usually are on our honeymoon in early September. It was negative so I didn't think anything else of it. Around Oct. 7 I started having some mild cramping, my breasts were sore and I was noticing a heightened sensitivity to smells. Bought a pregnancy test on the 15th and I instantly had a dark pink positive! In shock, my hubby and I drove back to the store and bought another one... same result.

After that long story, here is my question. Could the negative pregnancy test in September have been wrong and did I get pregnant in early September? Could I have even been able to get pregnant in early October if I didn't have a period in September, and if I DID get pregnant around Oct. 1 would I have been having symptoms 1-2 weeks later?

  • Call your doctor and tell them you have very irregular cycles and don't know how far along you are, they will probably do a dating ultrasound to measure the baby. GL.

  • If you don't know when you ovulated, it's pretty much impossible to know. Your dr will probably initally go by your LMP, but once you have your first u/s then you will have a more definitive answer. Sorry that probably isn't what you want to hear, but that's pretty much how it is.

  • Without charting your BBT it's hard to know for sure how far along you are.  Your negative in September could have simply been too soon after ovulation (maybe you were only 5-9 days along) and you got a false negative.  It's also possible you ovulated really late and weren't pregnant by that point.  If you are 8 weeks based on LMP that you are at MOST 8 weeks along.  Don't be surprised if when you go to the doctor you are only 6 or something.  No need to freak out.  Irregular cycles often mean that you ovulate later (sometimes many many days later) than CD14.

As for symptoms, 1 week after ovulation is really too soon, but 2 weeks after ovulation is when many women start seeing some symptoms.

  • Thanks for the replies. I guess I will just have to wonder for a couple more weeks, it's just so hard. haha :)

  • I'm in the same boat.  What I think was my period last month was very abnormal and started a day late.  It was A LOT lighter than normal.  I took a test the day after I due for AF and negative.

Also, I didn't really feel like I ovulated this past month (no EWCM, I do not chart or temp).  I took a test 2 days after AF was due and it was positive.  So, I'm going off my last "period" until I hear otherwise.  I told my doctor this when I scheduled my appointment, but they still wanted to wait 3 weeks.

  • I had a very similar situation. I found out I was pregnant September 18th, but my last menstrual period was July 15th. I took many pregnancy tests in August and early September which were all negative, so I had to have an ultrasound, and it turned out that though my LMP was in July, I concieved September 6th.

So you could have possibly gotten false negatives, or you are like me and just ovulated kind of randomly.

    This :)

I got pregnant on BCP and usually have longer cycles (even on the pill, I never actually got my period during placebo week - it always came after) so I know just using my LMP isn't accurate since I don't O on day 14. So I'll have a dating u/s when I get my first appointment.

  • We can't tell you how many weeks you are. Seems like with your irregular periods and lack of charting, there is no way to tell until you see your doctor. Good luck to you.
