If you use crocheted dish cloths, please come in

Hi

Im trying to reduce teh number of sponges i use as to not be wasteful, so i looked up patters for crocheting dish cloths online and found some great ones. However, they all call for cotton yarn. I have a TON of acrylic yarn and am wondering if i can use that instead? wont be very thrifty if i have to buy more yarn to make the cloths instead of using what i have.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • I don't have an opinion b/c I am a really new knitter but the dish cloths I've knit were all from cotton- my knitting friend/ teacher had me get Kitchen Cotton or Sugar 'n Cream (love this- knits fast!) and I've read Lionsbrand is also used.  Some people say that acrylic works, but is less absorbent.  I imagine if you're using it for scrubbing that'd be fine and might even dry out faster.  GL!

  • I've been making some with cotton yarn. I used cotton, because I wasn't sure about washing non-cottons. If the yarn wrapper says that its machine washable, though, you should be fine. These have been super quick to make and look really pretty... I'm thinking about making enough to give as "face cloths" for Christmas gifts.

  • I would definitely stick to the cotton. Acrylic wont hold up well in the washing, for as many times as you need to wash knit/crocheted wash cloths, and it doesnt absorb in the same way. Arcylic is a synthetic fiber so it just doesnt work quite the same. Plus it pills really easy. Most big craft stores have a brand of cotton called Sugar N Cream, and its great for washcloths. There is even a free pattern on the wrapper, and its super cheap! GL!
