Anyone NOT have a data plan on their cell?

We are up for new cell phones....and everything is all "smart" or needs a data plan! I don't want or need it since I am home all day! I also hate to pay the crazy $$$ for data plans! Sprint even charges an extra $10 a month (on top of data plan) if your phone is smart! lol

I just want a dumb phone that has a cheap plan and can text with qwerty....is this even possible? Even with the huge discount we get through dh's employer, $100+ a month for 2 cell phone seems so ridiculous. That is a lot of money to just talk/text.

Re: Anyone NOT have a data plan on their cell?

  • We just got rid of our Blackberries for "regular" cell phones. We have Verizon, and there was not a lot to choose from. Online had much more options than the store. We both got basic Samsung Intensity and it has the flip out keyboard. My mom just got an LG Cosmo (touchscreen). They were all FREE online (w/ a 2 year contract)

Our bill went from $165/month to $82/month! I miss my smartphone, but love the money we are saving! We just didn't use it enough to warrant paying so much.

  • I don't have one  yet.  I was due for an upgrade back in Feb. but I like my phone so much and was delaying having to pay for a data plan.

Thanks for the info NikCole, I didn't realize I could even get a non-Smart phone!  I might have to consider that instead of the iPhone when I decide to upgrade.

  • We do not....we are on a budget, so an extra $60+ a month just is not something we wanted to spend.  That being said, we both do want IPhones, but we may have to just wait a few years.  We have a Mac and there is a lot we could sync up with and we use our phones a lot for taking pictures, so it would be nice to have nice quality ones.  I bring my camera for any activties, but we use our phones to send each other pictures throughout the day when the other one is at work.

  • I dont want one either. i have a regular phone with a texting plan from verizon.
  • DH & I still have "dumb" phones. With me not working & we just bought a new van there is no way we are forking out an extra $60+ a month. I need to get a new phone soon & will probably get a LG Cosmos (?). There are very few to choose from & most are online only (we have Verizon)

  • I have the iPhone, but DH does not. My mom and sister do not either. We all have Verizon. It is pretty spendy, but I do use it a lot. I don't know if we will continue with me on the data plan when we are due for an upgrade, but I would definitely be sad to switch back. DH and my family spent a lot of time looking at the non-smart phones on line and were able to find things they wanted, I think you would find more online than in stores and it is not hard to activate the phone yourself.

  • I do not.  I have a basic, no frills, no texting phone.  But I am in serious need of an upgrade, my current phone display has actually been broken since last APRIL!  But I have been putting it off because everything required a data plan and I just cannot justify the cost being SAH.  DH has a smart phone, but his work pays his entire bill.  I did buy an iPod touch for around $60 which is nice to have, I am connected as long as where ever I am at has free WiFi.  A lot of places do.  It is also nice to have the apps for the kids.  I have a bunch of kids yoga apps that I use when Ty is having a melt down or just needs to calm himself.  Another advantage is if the kids break or lose my ipod, I haven't lost my phone as well.

  • I don't either. Same reason as you, I'm home all day with a desktop, laptop, ipad, and ipod touch so it seems overkill. I agree with PP's about looking online, because my grandfather went to upgrade his phone in the store and only had 2 non-smart phones to choose from.
  • DH and I both have droids through Virgin Mobile. No contracts, $27/month including taxes. Unlimited web, text and 300 min/month talk time for each phone.

    Wow!

Wow is right!  I thought our unlimited for our BB's for 2 phones at $110 a month was pretty good.  I'll have to look into that in March when our contract is up.  For some reason, I didn't think the reception was the greatest here with Virgin.
