What is your 12mo old's nap schedule?

What is your 12mo doing in terms of sleep these days? Specifically daytime sleep. I completely cannot remember what DD was doing in terms of time, but I know she was still napping twice a day. ZeeToddler was also napping twice a day at this age, but I think it was morning nap around 9:30-10 and afternoon nap around 2. Keep reading if you want to know WHY I'm asking, but it doesn't really matter. I just like to see myself type. Wink

Yes, yes, back to the kids I watch. Big Smile

The little one just turned 1 at the beginning of the month and is still definitely a 2x/day napper. Sometimes 3, but usually just 2. This is based on following her sleep cues- if I get it right there is no crying at all, if I mis-judge it and wait too long there's tons of tears and a red puffy face (hers, usually).

She ALWAYS falls asleep for her first nap between 9 and 9:30, I think she gets up around 7. Trying to keep her awake past that time results in disastrous screaming, gnashing of teeth, and rending of garments. It's just not an option.

Sometimes she'll wake up on her own after about 90 minutes, sometimes she will literally sleep ALL DAY (yesterday was (9:30 until I woke her at 4, no joke. She always sleeps more on Monday's, but usually it's not this long.). If I wake her after 1.5-2 hours she's usually okay but will go down for her second nap around 12:30 to 1 and sleep for about 2-3 hours. She's rarely happy regardless of her sleep situation, sadly.

If she wakes up on her own it's usually around 11 and she will go back to sleep at 1 to 1:30 and sleep for 2-3 hours.

Occasionally she will need to take another nap right around 4:30 or 5, but not usually anymore.

I have no idea what time they are trying to put her to bed at night, but they are going down the same road they did with Zee, which is wanting her to sleep less during the day. I'm guessing they've never seen how she gets when she's not well rested or else they totally hate me. She's not a very happy baby to start with (for example, in the past 3 weeks she has screamed almost non-stop. she had a couple good hours on Friday at the petting farm, but that's about it. she's even been screaming in her sleep, which I attribute to teething but if you ask the older kids "What does BabyZee like to do?" they both answer "She likes to cry a lot" which is just heartbreaking, but it's another post altogether. it's not just with me, she's like that at home, too.) but not letting her sleep just makes it 10x worse.

Re: What is your 12mo old's nap schedule?

  • Oh that makes me so sad for her! Sleeping all day....my mouth fell open when I read that! Is she not getting sleep at night?!

My son is 20 months now but at 12 months he was solidly on a 2 nap schedule (until just 2 weeks ago, actually). He went down for his first nap at 9 and his second nap around 1:30. He slept for about an hour and half at each nap. He also slept about 11.5-12 hours at night at that age. (Down around 7 pm and up around 6:30-7 am)

  • DD is 20 months, but she's had the same sleep schedule since she was about 8 months old.  She wakes up around 9ish, takes a nap at 1pm, wakes at 3:30 or 4 and goes to bed around 9pm.  She's never taken two naps, just one long one.  It just happened that way.
  • at 12 months Jack was moving from 1 good solid nap and 2 semi cat naps to 1 solid 2 hour nap. He started transitioning mainly due to daycare but every once in a while he'll do a solid nap and one cat nap on the weekend.

  • Wow! Around her first birthday (about 6 weeks ago), DD went on a sleep strike for a week and refused all naps. Since then, she's a single-napper. She usu. goes down around 12 - 12:30 and sleeps about 1.5 hrs, if I'm lucky. Lately, she's been showing signs of getting sleepy around 10am, but every time I try to put her down, she fights it. She's working on her top two teeth right now, so everything is thrown off. She also only sleeps from about 8pm to 4am, then goes back down until 6:30am - ish (I'm still nursing her).  Hmmmm......should I try to transition her back to 2 naps?
  • When DD was 12 months old, she slept from 9:30-11, and then again from 1:30-3. She was sleeping 12-13 hours at night (and still does). She didn't transition to one nap (at home) until about 15 months.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • We did the 2-3-4 thing with Kate.  So, she woke up around 7:30 and took her first nap around 9:30.  She'd wake up around 10:30 and then go down for her second nap around 1:30.  She'd wake up around 3:00 and then go down for the night around 7:00.  (This was mainly our goal.  You guys know that Kate's not a great sleeper.)

What you're describing on the part of the baby sounds like a *lot* of sleep to me.  Like I would be concerned, but I don't know how you would bring that up with the parents since they're crazy.  I want to know how many hours of sleep she's getting a night if she's wanting to sleep that much during the day.  What kind of sleep environment does she have at home?  Co-sleeping?  Crib sleeping?  Maybe try the opposite and see if she gets more rest?

  • At 11-12 months I started having a terrible time getting DD to take 2 naps.  Once I started paying more attention to her cues she showed that she was really ready to go down to a single long nap.  She's been on the same schedule since: up around 8:30, nap at about 1:30 until 3:30 or 4, and she's down for the night around 9.

Sometimes we'll have to shift times 30 mins earlier or later, but I really try to avoid it.  She enforces a strict schedule on me, not vice versa ;)

I agree with PP's that I'd be concerned about her nighttime sleep situation...

  • Wow.  My kiddo is definitely not an all-day sleeper.  She wakes around 7:30, goes down for her first nap between 10:30 and 11 (depending on sleep cues, it could be earlier), will sleep about an hour to hour and a half, goes down for second nap between 3 and 3:30 and will sleep again for an hour to an hour and a half.  She goes to bed around 7:15-7:30 at night.

  • DS (12 months) wakes up between 7:30-8:30, naps at around 11-12 for 1-2 hours and again at 4-5 for 1-2 hours (we always wake him at 6 if he is still asleep) and gos to bed at 7:30-9 and sleeps through the night.
