Too much house? & a Poll

I was reading a DIY home blog recently and she mentioned that their house was 6,000 square feet. It's just her, her DH, & 1 older child. Does that seem excessive to you? Does each person really need 2,000 square feet?!?!

1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you?

2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)?

3. Are you content in your current home?

4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation?

5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation?

Re: Too much house? & a Poll

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you?  Yes.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)?  2500-3000

    3. Are you content in your current home?  Current home is 1600 sq ft.  Ok for the 3 of us.  But would really like a bigger house for another baby and the future.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? An addition of a large bonus room.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation?   Yes.  He originally thought our house was fine forever.  I wanted bigger.  Now I just want another baby, he thinks we need bigger, I say we'll deal.

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? Obviously :)2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? Probably no more than 3,000 (especially if I was the one doing the cleaning!)3. Are you content in your current home? Currently yes. Of course I could find improvements, but generally I'm content.4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? One more bedroom (if we're able to have more children) and probably one county over for schools (but we have good ones here too). Otherwise I LOVE our home.5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? Not sure...I think he wants a lot more house than I do and is def ready to spend more $$ than I would like. Good thing we have a while to make sure we're on the same page.
  • 1. 6000 sq feet seems excessive for most families, IMO

    2. Our current house is about 2200 or 2300 sq feet finished and we have plenty of space. We have another 600-700 sq feet we can finish if we want.

    3. Yes. I love this house and as long as we stay in the country, I plan on staying here.

    4. Our house could definitely use some updating, but it doesn't really bother me. We took down the most offensive brass fixtures as soon as we moved in. We still have brass door knobs and hinges, and our bathroom lighting is ugly, but not enough for me to feel like it needs to be changed ASAP. I'd love to update the bathrooms and do a kitchen remodel, but I'm happy with our house the way it is.

    5. Yes, we both love this house. We agree on what we'd like to do over time if we stay here.

    1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? No not really considering I live in a big house with only 3 people. Different people have different reasons for wanting what they want or have.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? somewhere between what I have now and 6000 or 6500 sq ft

    3. Are you content in your current home? Yes for the most part. The things I don't like, I'll change.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? demoing my kitchen and making it bigger.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? Yep.

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? No. My parents live in a 6,000 sq. ft house just the two of them, but they use every single bit of space when the family gets together. I would love a larger home.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? Mine is 2600 right now and I would kill for another 1000 sq. feet or so.

    3. Are you content in your current home? Yes and no, but we aren't moving so I guess I have to be.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? A MUCH larger living room area and more storage and closet space and a useable back yard.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? He thinks this house is just great because it has a huge bonus room and then 4 bedrooms, he turned the bonus room into a theater room, and it never gets used, so to me its a wasted space. If we could totally get new furniture and re-purpose 2 rooms and add storage I would be happy.

Good point. Hadn't thought of that...my parents' home is around 5500 sq ft (they added a large addition a few years ago after we all left home and I sort of forget about it's size now). It is very nice when we're all there - plenty of space for each sib & sig other/family to spread out in. They've also been able to host family & friends in need a few times as well in the last few years since the addition was finished. In fact, they currently have a family of 4 living with them b/c their home flooded and they are rebuilding. So I can see the benefit of the larger size home.

Although that still doesn't make me want one quite so large :)

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you?  For 3 people I think it's a lot but for 5 I think it would be perfect.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)?  Right now probably 5,000 sq. ft but once DS arrives, I may want bigger

    3. Are you content in your current home?  Yes for the most part.  I would like our storage room to be finished (not currently counted in our sq. footage) and our bonus room to be much bigger.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? See #3

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation?  Yes

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you?  to each their own and if they can clean it then whatever ;)

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)?  I have no idea maybe 3000 sq feet.

    3. Are you content in your current home?  no we are renting a townhouse that is less than 1600 sq feet.  It is a little tight but if we bought I'm not sure we could sell in this economy so we are sticking around.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? to move closer to one of our jobs.  Nothing would make me happy about this house where it currently resides. The house is awesome and the community is great but far as hell from our jobs.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation?  he would want bigger and I want practical.

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? Yes. Although I'd love to have room for a real craft room, theater room, playroom, etc... so maybe once I had all that, it might be close!

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? 3000-3500

    3. Are you content in your current home? Yes, it's perfect for the 3 of us. If we have another child, I expect things will get tight. It's about 1900 sq ft.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation?  Adding on 4th bedroom and another bath.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? Yes

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? No. I definitely would want more room so we can comfortably house family for holidays, etc. Plus I would love sq footage for larger rooms like a theater, bar, and game room.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? Probably between 6,000 and 7,000

    3. Are you content in your current home? For now, but we are filling up about 3,500 sq feet right now so expanding would be nice. We can finish our walk-up attic and make it 4,000 livable which we would love to do. We would do a bar and a game room/man room most likely.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation?  We built our house so we are pretty happy with things. As said before, if we could finish the 3rd floor that would be nice. We know we will build our dream house with ideal floor plan one day though, so we are definitely fine for now.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? Yep. Although, we agree to go bigger for sure but I am already over capacity on cleaning this house by myself. It's insane. He would have to give in to a cleaning lady!

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? A little bit. That just sounds massive to me.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? 1600-1800 sq ft

    3. Are you content in your current home? We just moved into a 1150 sq ft rental home, and it is a bit small. But I love the neighborhood and yard enough that we are making it work.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation?  If this house had one more bathroom (only has 1), maybe a small 3rd bedroom that I could use as an office/guest bedroom and an updated kitchen, I would live here forever.

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? Not really.  I'd love it!

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)?  Our home is right under 4,000 and it seems perfect for us right now.  I agree that bigger isn't fun to clean, but it's worth it.

    3. Are you content in your current home? Definitely...I LOVE it!

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? I can't think of anything right now...except for an elevator, but that's not that realistic ; )

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? Most definitely.  Considering the fact that we just bought this house in August, we had quite a few talks about our expectations in a house and we found a great one for us.

  • 1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? I don't know if I have ever been in a home that is that big, so I am having a hard time picturing it. So yes, that seems a bit excessive to me.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? Probably around 2800-3000

    3. Are you content in your current home? Our current home is my ideal square footage (see above) but not in the way I would want it, we have 1600 square feet on the main living area and 1400 in a finished walkout basement (bedroom, office, play area, living area, bathroom). So even though we have a lot of square footage, the main living areas are a bit small. We are thinking of doing some work in our kitchen, which would help, but the rooms and closets are just smaller than I would like.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? Doing the work in the kitchen (taking out a half wall, extending our cabinets and countertops and replacing current countertops with granite). Also doing work in our backyard so it is more useable (ripping out some juniper bushes, backfilling, getting a fence and play set) If we did these two things, I would be content for awhile.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? Yes, we both love our house and know that to get the space/square footage we have now, our mortgage would more than double if we moved. He is not 100% sold on the kitchen, that is why we have not done it yet. We both want to move probably in the next 5 years or so.

    1. Does 6,000 sq ft for 3 people seem excessive to you? I seriously have no conception of space so I can't answer definitively, but I think we have less than half of that so yes.

    2. Approx how many sq ft would your ideal house be (in the real world...not fantasy land)? Again, can't say for sure... maybe a little more than what I have now.  Anyway enough to have three comfortable bedrooms, equal number of bathrooms and a kitchen where I don't hit my elbows on the island.

    3. Are you content in your current home? It works fine for us now but I'd like to go a little bigger and a different layout when/if we have a second child in 3-4 years.

    4. What would realistically make you completely content in your current living situation? Just move things around a bit... we're in a townhouse so the second bedroom is two floors down from our room, I don't like that for LO.  I'd rather him be on the same floor or one floor down. As it is he's just going to stay in our room as a newborn. It'd also be nice to have a teensy backyard so the dog can roam around a bit outside when its nice out, and a more low-traffic area inside the house where we can put her kennel so it isn't an eyesore.

    5. Are you & your DH in agreement on your ideal situation? Well he hates yard work but he agrees with me that the dog might be happier if she could go outside more freely.
